What's New?

I stayed at the Puesta del Sol for 300 pesos a night (about $32US). Very clean, with full bath (shower), two doubles, ceiling fan, tiled floors and a full porch (with screens) over looking the beach. The porch had a fridge, sink and cooktop (gas). If you need to use kitchen facilities, make sure they promise all things work. I ate out all the time. They do have a pool but it\'s not too attractive and not on the beach side, it\'s clean. It\'s right next to Trailer Park Playa and in the middle of downtown on a nice part of the beach.\n\nI\'m not sure of rate increases from Dec-March.\n\nDecember 2000', 0);

Tom: As I sit quietly in the early morning tranquility, I am thankful for the warm sun of Mexico far from the the grey rain; and soul wrenching cold of the Pacific Northwest. I am also thankful for being included with open arms, at the English language Church St. Patricks- by -the-Sea in Melaque. Nancy Lennie, who introduced us to the church is a hard working generous community minded entrepreneur who works tirelessly to assist in keeping the spirit of God vibrant in Melaque. On Christmas eve day I was blessed to experience a very unique and cherishable setting. There were no walls, only the spectacular vista of water, sand, mountains. there was no eliteism. only a feeling of welcome to all who attended the service and those who passed by. there was no formality. just informal structure of praise,song and friendshiip. The bustle of Restaurant Maya created a tie between everyday life and the meaning of worship. It felt very relevant to be living the spirit in an active dynamic environment. Thank you for finding this special spot. Thank you for taking the time energy and perserverance to constantly bring this community together.!\n\nBarbara Crompton\nVancouver, b.c. \n\n\nTom: St Patricks meets in the same area as Restaurant Maya every Sunday at 10;30 for worship. This is the Third year we have been actively meeting in the Coastal area from Manzanillo to La Manzanilla between Nov. and June each year.\n\nRichard Lennie\nlapaloma@ciber.net.mx\nhttp://www.tomzap.com/lapaloma.html', 3);

Tom: Is the hotel Tropical open yet or do you know when it may open? We have been going to Barra for years and love it but still like to know what is recommended for food and hotel before we go? Seems like it changes from year to year. Is the pool OK at the Barra Hotel?\n\nSorry to hear about Felix and Mary. They are so much a part of Barra to all who visit there. \n\nJan 2001.', 0);

Tom, I very much enjoy your web site on visitors comments on Barra and Melaque. As this will be our first visit to melaque we are really looking forward to it.\n\nWe have contacted Tere Smith at Bungalows Mayorca and have reserved a room . The only problem that we have ,and that I hope some of your readers can help us with is that we are taking the first class bus to Melaque during the day time from PV . But the only first class bus that I can find on the net leaving Melaque leaves at 1:45 in the morning.\n\nWe are going back to Puerto Vallarta on the 17th of Feb.2001. Do only second class busses run through the day or are there other first class busses running through Melaque during the day time? \n\nAlso how are the second class busses to ride on and is much longer of a trip on these busses?\n\nIf any of your readers can help us, please e mail me at\njimmyd@telus.net.\n\nJames T Dobinson\nCampbell River BC Canada', 0);

Hi... Your page is very interesting!\n\nMaybe you can help me finding something... I\'m looking for the telephone number of Don Alfonso owner of La POSADA TONALA on "main" street of La Manzanilla If you can help... We need a place for 3 weeks...\n \nThanks\n \nJosée\n(from Québec...)', 0);

\nHi Tom,\n\nI have been reading Visitors comments every day for the last month. I feel like I have been there already and know the people and places. Your site brings people together that share the same feelings about a wonderfull place. I hope that when I get there on January 16th, it will become part of me, and I will become one of those people.\n\nI wish I would of found your site before booking @ the Blue Bay Resort. I would have loved to stay in Bara. But that is not the case. \n\nI understand there is buses running on HWY 200. I am considering walking the 5 klm from the Blue Bay to Hwy 200 and catching the local bus to Bara.\nDoes anyone know how often it runs and if it would stop to pick us up.\nOr should i just fork out the dought and take a Taxi . No matter what I will be going to Bara for breakfast at Bananas, afternoon drinks at Popeyes and dinner somewhere on the beach. \n\nAgain Tom Love your site and keep up the good work , because you have not heard the last of me.\n\nJosee', 0);

\nI\'m not sure how web links will work on this board ... but this schedule shows only one bus leaving for PV per day. Leaving from Barra but must stop at Melaque bus terminal.\n\nhttp://www.melaque.com.mx/bus_schedule.html', 4);

Maybe that is 2 .... 9am and 1pm', 4);

I can\'t comment about the buses other than I did travel on them, but that was from Barra where I was staying.\n\nBananas was great for breakfast because the view makes it. But don\'t count out the Delphin Hotel as it offers a buffet which includes all you can eat fruit, bread or toast, cereal with milk, coffee or tea plus one cooked item form their list of items including hotcakes, eggs, omelets etc for only 29 pesos. A real deal in my opinion and we ate at both.\n\nPopeyes definately has the best margarita\'s in town, Alberto the owner is great and speaks a little English. He also makes the best guacamole and salsa mexicano, and if you can eat shellfish a definite must is his specialty "Momias" which is a shrimp dish. Magnifico!!\n\nAnother great place to visit and drink marg\'s is "Chips" upstairs and try and get there for the sunset.\n\nHope this helps. I would gladly answer any other questions you have as we have been down there several times.\n\nMelanie', 8);

Thanks, I\'ve added the number to the La Manzanilla page.', 5);

Primera Plus leaves Melaque at 9:15am and 1:00pm I think. Web site at: www.flecha-amarilla.com.\n\nadios1', 4);

It wasn\'t opened in Nov. It looks like the owners ran out of pesos. It was just sitting on the beach and fenced in. I don\'t think it is an option this year!', 3);

Dear Josee\nBusses are frequent and will stop for you. Ask the locals where to wait. And please drop by Pipers bar!\nJohn', 8);

Does anyone know about the new road that they are cutting in the mountain above the village of La Manzanilla? Also, is the process of moving toward conversion of the Ejido land to trust funds movng forward?', 0);

We just loved Melaque back when the old CoCo Club (later to be Casa Grande) was in full swing - before the 1994 earthquake which destroyed it. We have been back several times since, usually staying at Blue Bay, 45 mins north of Melaque. We always were there for the St. Patrick Day\'s festivities in St Patricio and never missed the mass and goings on at Los Pelicano\'s taverna on the beach on the morning of March 17th. Our most favourite taverna was Viva Maria which is very close to Los Pelicanos. Viva Maria was owned by Doctor Roberto Woo and his wife Leslie (from Ottawa!) and we always felt so welcome there and it was so much fun - especially when Roberto had his guitar in his hand and sang those beautiful Mexican songs on the beach at night! We have since moved south to Puerto Escondido - another quiet and "undiscovered" village. We are driving down this year (Feb to Apr) and will be in Melaque again for the St Patrick week, and will be visiting Viva Maria\'s and Roberto, and looking to see if anything has progressed on rebuilding the hotel.', 0);

Just want to thank everyone for all the great e mails I have been getting since I closed Restaurant Judy\'s in Melaque. Is nice to know people enjoyed it! \nThanks again Tom, for this site. It is a wonderful way to keep up with the doings in my old hometown! Your new format is amazing. Judy Locajudy@aol.com', 0);

We are planning to be in Puerto Vallarta in February and will be traveling up and down the coast looking for accommodation in a smaller community for our next trip. Does anyone know whether you can take a bus from P.V. to Barra directly?\n\nThanks for your help.\n\nMarilyn', 8);

Glad you like it. Keep on writing in.\n\nTom', 18);

Hi! I am finally returning to Barra after a long 3 years. Unfortunately I have to fly into PV since Manzanillo apparently has become a very popular destination meaning all the tickets are completely sold out from Calgary. However, I am wondering about the buslines that run to Melaque from PV. I got onto the website for Primera Plus but the buses only leave in the morning and at noon. I am not arriving in PV until 6:30 pm so I was hoping for an evening bus... is there such a thing?? I would very much rather NOT stay in PV because I am not familiar with it and this is the first time my friend has been to Mexico. \n\nAlso, since I haven\'t been to Barra or Melaque in quite awhile, I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction for some budget lodging. We are both young girls (early 20\'s) and dont\' care whether our lodgings are deluxe or holes in the ground.... I am scared that there won\'t be anything left since Feb 16th till 27th is a very popular time... AHHH!!\n\nAnd last but not least, does anyone know if Banana\'s is still open? I heard about the storm and Froy is a really good friend of mine who actually even came up to Canada to visit me last year and I want to know whether he\'s still around and if so, is he working there again... \n\nThanks so much for your help and I really really enjoy your site. I can\'t wait to be back in that area again after being away for sooooooo long. \n\nSarah.', 0);

My husband and I will be spending Feb. in Melaque and we have read about the above hotel. Does anyone have any info about it or the Azteca Hotel. ?? ie.kitchen, cleanliness, cost??', 0);

Dear Nan,\n We spent a week last April at the hotel Bahia. If you look back in messages I posted a bit about it. Hotel Bahia is only 3 or 4 years old and when we were there it was well maintained.A very basic group kitchen is available. It is a bit of a walk to centro but close to the best part of the beach to swim at. Close to our favorite hang out Viva Maria. The price we paid was 1050.00 pesos for 2 for the week! Hope this helps . \nEnjoy Melaque and its beautiful people,\nSandra', 23);

We are going to Sayulita in March of this year. Would love to hear from anyone else who has been to that town in Nayarit?\nWe have mostly stayed in larger resort type towns and are wondering what suggestions people might have about this new destination of ours. We are staying in a small beachfront "casita". We have been told we ought to taxi from PV airport to Sayulita when we first arrive with our luggage? Does this seem excessive ? We will use the busses if we decide to travel out of Sayulita while we are there.\nHope we can find someone out there who has been here???', 0);

Hi Gretchen:\n\nI have been to Sayulita, but only once and I stayed 4 days. Maybe there are others who can tell you a lot more. My impressions:\nI stayed at Papa\'s Palapas on the beach, you have to see it to believe it.\nThe place was very small when I was there last.\nPretty and quiet, very quiet.\n\nWe took a bus from PV and it didn\'t seem too complicated. Just main drag and ask for the bus. If you are tired and have a lot of luggage a cab would be great, but it is a fair distance.\n\nAnything else I can tell you, I will.\nCheers\nDeb\nVancouver', 25);

My family and I just came back from Melaque and we stayed at Posada Cervantes. It is our fourth vacation there, and by far the best, do to the great hospitality and service from the owners of this small and cozy posada. \n\nThe posada is less than two years old, it is immaculately clean, good size swimming pool that doubles as a water fountain. The front is a combination of reception area, restaurant and bar under a great palapa. \n\nThe menu in the restaurant offers a combination of American cuisine and local dishes, all reasonably priced and with great presentation. The posada manager, Victor, is a naturalized American fluent in English and Spanish, friendly and helpful \nwith info about area activities and entertainment like horse back riding, fishing, shopping, diving etc. I heard only praise from the other tourists about Posa da Cervantes. We highly recommend it!!', 0);

Hi Sandra..... a hotel for only 1050 pesos!!!??? wow, I am impressed. that is only about $180 canadian dollars for a week. I wonder if that price is still the same. We are going to Sayulita this year,which is probably about the same size as Melaque and our place is $450 AMERICAN a week..... YIKES we are foolish I think. too late now, but we were having trouble finding places that were much less than that without going too far from the airport. in PV. Did you fly into Manzanillo and then travel up to Melaque? Our place in Sayulita will have everything though, including a kitchen equipped, and its own access to the beach, blah blahblah...... But have heard nothing but nice things about Melaque ever since we booked our trip..... oh well , live and learn.', 23);

I\'d like to thank everyone that emailed responses to my last post. All the information was of great assistance to my friend and I. I was now wondering if anyone could help me obtain the email addresses or fax numbers of budget hotels in Melaque and/or Barra. I have come to the conclusion that February is a very busy month and I would really like to arrange some kind of reservation, so I can actually sit back and enjoy the fact that I have airline tickets to Mexico!! So if anyone can suggest any budget hotels and can provide email addresses or fax numbers for them, it would be greatly appreciated. I could call them too, I suppose, I do speak reasonable spanish, but I believe emailing or faxing would be more time efficient. :) \nThanks!\nSarah \nCalgary, AB', 0);

Hi! It sounds like you stayed at a lovely hotel. How big was it, and what price range would you say it was in?\nThanks, Sarah.', 27);

Our dealings with Senor Ramon using email at;\n\nE-mail: ramon_barra@yahoo.com\n\nor try calling at;\n\n\nTel/fax: 52-335-56114 although we didn\'t have much success with the phone.\n\nThey also have a website at;\n\nhttp://www.pathcom.com/~msclarke/\n\nwe live in Ottawa, so are fellow Canucks, hope yuo find something and enjoy.....', 29);

In mid December I posted a message to Tom that indicated I was having some trouble getting responses to my inquiries. In that message I included the name of La Paloma. Shortly after sending the message La Paloma did contact me via e-mail and fax. although they did not have accomodations available for the dates we wanted they voluntarily checked on another location (also not available). Even though I have not been to La Paloma all indications are that the owners operate in a very professional manner and make every attempt to communicate with prospective clients. \nGood news Tom, we have booked at the Hotel Monterey. We were about to give up on staying at Malaque when we got a very helful and encouraging e-mail from one of your contributors. We phoned Hotel Monterey a couple of times until we were able to speak to Ivonne Garcia. She was very accomodating and spoke good english. We received confirmation by e-mail and fax.\nWhen you are trying to book at any of the accomodations I would suggest that you not take for granted that your fax or e-mail will be answered, especially if it is a busy time of the year.\nAllow yourself plenty of time to make arrangements and be patient for a few days (7-10) for a reply. Telephone, probably the best.', 0);

Try www.playasayulita.com\n\nThe cab ride is probably $30-$35 dollars. You can catch a Pacific bus-it stops across the street from the airport every 1/2hr. or hour. White with green lettering. It will either drop you off at the cross roads into Sayulita or drive in I\'m not sure. I suggest taking the cab upfront and bumming a ride back or taking the bus!\n\nJust search under Sayulita, Mexico on your browser!!', 25);

When in Melaque earlier this week we loved \'chiros\' (deep-fried cinnamon and sugar-covered twists) sold by our friend\'s favorite vendor. Does anyone know a recipe for the dough?', 0);

Hi, I believe you mean Churro. They have even made their way to Victoria, British Columbia! Here is a link which I think will give you the recipe you want, though I\'m sure you\'ll get lots of replies.http://www.xmission.com/~dderhak/recipe/churros.htm', 35);

Hi Lingian, my wife and I are going back to Melaque again in feb. for 2 months. We took a quick look at the Posada Cervantes. Liked what we saw but wanted something more central to town. How long were you there? Does the Posada Cervantes have weekly and monthly rates? If I remember, the rooms at the back have kitchens.\n Thanks, Gordy', 27);

We are avidly interested in Barra de Navidad but since we are complete novices at Mexican travel we are wondering if it is a good idea. Would Melaque or other coastal cities be more suited to our naivete?\nWe read an article on Barra and instantly fell in love with the style of community, beach, food, people and accommodation.\nCould someone give us some pointers as to best times (we were thinking sometime in March).\nAlso if we were going somewhere in that region (Melaque, Barra, etc.) what is the best airport to fly into, Manzanillo or Puerto Vallarta?\nThanks in advance for your help and comments.\nDaryl Austman', 0);

Melaque- Stayed a short time at the Orientales - right on the beach- nice people. Guests are both American and Canadian etc and are very friendly if you want to find people who have been going for a long time and know the ropes and are friendly I\'d recommen this place. Some people go there so much they call ahead and ask for the rooms to be painted before they get there. 011-52-368-43482\nOr if you want to go to Barra try the Marquez- nice people but not on the beach but an easy walk. THey don\'t speak English very well so it is more difficult for us. But if you speak the language they are sooo nice and try to be so accomodating and the place is super clean and is gated with a night watchman full time.\nFax 335-56300 or 335-55304 tel. Barra Hotle is more business like and I don\'t think the employees are from the area and don\'t really seem to be as accomadating. Their room at Marquez was $486 or close for 13 days.', 29);

Heard that Cabo Blanco Hotel was all-inclusive. Does anyone know if you can stay there and not go all-inclusive ? We were there two years ago, did not go all-inclusive and golfed at Isla Navidad. Planning to go back to Barra de Navidad soon and would appreciate any comments.\n\nthanks !', 0);

We stayed in Melaque last March, and it was a perfect time to be there. Both towns were quieting down, as the people who stay there all season (Nov - Mar) were heading home. The weather was perfect, and there was lots of hotel availability. We flew right into Manzanillo, and it was just a short cab ride into Melaque. \n\nThis was our first time in Mexico as a family, and it was just a wonderful, comfortable, great, and safe place to be. My teenagers wandered freely around to restaurants and to the beaches, and we all travelled their buses from Barra to Melaque to La Manzanilla, Cuastocomates, etc. Take some advice, and just Go! You will love it.', 39);

I have been to Barra twice and LOVE it! I was in Manzanillo three years ago and took a day trip and fell in love. For the past two years we have stayed at the Cabo Blanco (in January). We couldn\'t get a reservation for the week we wanted to go this year and are heading to PV on the 13th.\n\nI highly recommend the Cabo Blanco, the staff was very friendly and helpful and it\'s a very nice hotel with a large pool, swim up bar etc. The food is fine, but definately not fine dining. Only problem is it\'s not directly on the beach (about three blocks). The Marre Tiera is the beach club owned by the hotel where you could also get drinks as part of your all-inclusive package. I hear it was damaged during the Sept. storm and I don\'t know what state it is in now. We went there every evening to watch the sun go down and have a before dinner cocktail!\n\nThere are many good little restraunts, we particularly liked SeaMaster which is right on the beach, perfect for sipping a Pina Colada and watching whales in the bay! There is another place (name escapes me) right beside SeaMaster where we spent many an afternoon, not big on decor (open air, thatched roof, dirt floor, plastic chairs) but the food is good and there is plenty of it.\n\nAs you have probably guessed I think Barra is a great place, I wish I was going back this year! Have a great trip.', 39);

The Churros\n\nHere\'s the ultimate recipe to make your own churros at home, just like they were at the churrería stands.\nOf course, the difference here is price. Here you can make a whole batch for what is cost for a few. Once you make the churros, you can make the authentic chocolate dip to dunk them in.\n\n Ingredients: (Makes one platefull)\n Vegetable or Olive Oil\n 1 cup water\n 1/2 cup margarine or butter\n 1/4 teaspoon salt\n 1 cup all-purpose flour\n 3 eggs\n 1/4 cup sugar\n 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)\n\nPrepare to fry the churros by heating oil in a pan (1 to 1&1/2 inches) to 360 degrees F.\n\nTo make churro dough, heat water, margarine and salt to rolling boil in 3-quart saucepan; stir in flour. Stir vigorously over low heat until mixture forms a ball, about 1 minute; remove from heat. \nBeat eggs all at once; continue beating until smooth and then add to saucepan while stirring mixture. \nSpoon mixture into cake decorators\' tube with large star tip (like the kind use to decorate cakes).\nSqueeze 4-inch strips of dough into hot oil. Fry 3 or 4 strips at a time until golden brown, turning once,about 2 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels. (Mix Sugar and the optional cinnamon); roll churros in sugar or dump the sugar on the pile of churros, like the pros. That churro taste will take you right back to your favorite summer days walking the paseos of Spain.\n\nNote: REAL churros in Spain are made without cinnamon mixed with the sugar, but the cinnamon adds an extra nice flavor.', 35);

Going to Barra THis month. Is there a place to buy a churro maker and not have to use a pastry bag? Thought the grandkids would like this is there were one. Maybe in Melaque?', 35);

Hola Mexico! Been to PE numerous times,but want to go to Melaque area this time for a change.Usually I just sniff around and find a room(with or without a view!)\nonce I get to a place.But from people\'s comments I have a feeling Barra and Melaque might be busier than Puerto Escondido,although it looks like a nice small place.So,I am wrong to assume that somewhere there is a room for me once I get there?And I mean a room for a reasonable price! Thanks for the info anyone,I am off in 3 days!!', 0);

Hi there. We are going to Melaque in a few days. Normally we would not think about tennis as this is more a "beach" vacation but I remember hearing about a tennis club nearby. Where is it and do you have to be a member? Can we just drop be anytime? Also is there an atm in Melaque.\n\nGracias!', 0);

We\'re heading down around the 18th of Jan. and wondering how the surf is? Anyone been to Cuyutlan and have information to share?', 0);

Hey\n\nI normaly stay in Puerto Vallarta but I have been to Sayulita a few times.Its very beautiful but you should take a cab the first time. You may want to rent a car. Sayulita is about an hour from the airport. Its a small town all on its own.Be careful drinking the water.\nI leave Monday for 3 weeks in Puerto Vallarta and the area.\n\n\nEnjoy \n\nMarc', 25);

Tennis El Palmar (250) 213-7115 (Canada), (3)355-6263 (local). You should be okay. Some hotels may be full at times during the high season, but not all of them. All hotels fill up for Christmas and Easter though.\n\nTom', 46);

I think Barra is a good destination for first-timers.\n\nMarch 10-17 is a big celebration in nearby Melaque.\nhttp://www.tomzap.com/patrick.html\n\nAnd I believe earlier in March is Carnival in Barra. Sorry I don\'t know more about that.\n\nTom', 39);

Hi Tom. We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights when we were down in April. We really liked it (we don\'t usually stay at places this expensive). You are right, it is not all-inclusive. The pool was great, the tennis courts were great, my son and husband played quite a bit of one-one-one at the small basketball court. There is also table tennis (ping pong). \n\nOne of the days we were there, must have been a Saturday or Sunday, they had loud music and DJ\'s who got a volleyball game going in the pool. It was fun for everybody and there was, of course, the obligatory shot of weak tequila margarita by the DJ when someone missed the ball. There is a swim up bar but you couldn\'t order drinks from it. \n\nThe food in the restaurant was decent but it kept weird hours --- sometimes we wanted to eat quite late and it wasn\'t open. All in all, it was really a worthwhile stay. I didn\'t notice any decay or rooms that couldn\'t be used (I saw that on your site somewhere). The staff were very friendly and helpful. Visitors were a mix of Mexican and American tourist. I think we were the only Canadians. It wasn\'t very busy for most of our stay.', 0);

Tom is right you have to be careful not to go when there is a holiday for there will be no hotels. I think Tom is referencing St. Patricks day which is big in the town of the same name (San Patricio). It is great to watch them build the 75 foot tower cover it with fire works and then light it that night.\n\nThe weather in March is great. I have been going to ther area for a number of years and choose to stay in some of the smaller villages like La Manzanilla and Tenacatita where the beaches are nicer and safer and the towns are quieter. Then if I want more stimulation I hop the bus and go to Melaque or Barra.', 39);

The most "newbie friendly" town is Barra simply because more Mexicans there speak English as compared to Melaque. Don\'t worry about being brand-new, over half the visitors that you\'ll meet on the street will be on their first or second trip.\n\nFly to Manzanillo, and while the plane is halfway there see if you can solicit other gringos into sharing the cost of a cab to Barra, or at least to Cihuatlan, from the airport. Many will be on an organized tour with their own transportation provided. A taxi costs twenty four dollars US from the Manzanillo airport to downtown Barra. This airport is not actually in Manzanillo, but rather it is much closer to Barra de Navidad than it is to its namesake. It\'s a sixteen mile journey.\n\nUnless you are going around the 17th of March which is Saint Patricks Day, I wouldn\'t bother making reservations. Should be relatively calm before the 12th and after the 19th. Even if some hotels are filled, others won\'t be. My favorite cheap hotel there is the hotel Jalisco, on avenue Jalisco. Stay on the third floor for best breezes.\n\nYou can hire a taxi to take you to La Manzanilla from Barra de Navidad for around sixteen dollars. This is a quaint village in which you can appreciate the small village atmosphere of Mexico. There are enough stores and restaurants around to keep you satisfied. Hire a cab from there to the town of Zijuatlan, and from there take a bus to the airport.\n\nBarra, Melaque and La Manzanilla are small and quite easy to navigate on foot. There are enough tourists roaming the streets in Barra that you should find your spontaneous questions are answered on-the-spot.\n\nHappy Trails!\n\nDavid Eidell', 39);

We would like to persoally thank ALL of you who have enlightened us of the wonders of Barra and Melague! You\'ve overwhelmed us with your great help and wonderful comments. Thank you so much for your help. It far exceeded my expectations. Could anyone offer an opinion?\nMy girlfriend and I are flying into Puerto Vallarta next week and we still haven\'t decided where to spend our week vacation: Barra de Navidad or Rincon de Guayabitos. We\'re having trouble differentiating between the two, actually, and can\'t find many resources to help. Can anyone offer any comparisons or contrasts? Thank you, \n(Also, I\'ve heard that much of Barra\'s beach was washed away last year. Is there much beach currently?)', 0);

Hi tom - first, your website is a wealth of information. thank you so much for all the work maintaining it. \n \nMy husband and I will be arriving at Manzanillo airport Feb 6, leaving Feb 15th. I use a wheelchair for distances and steps are difficult. Can you recommend any places to stay that would be $75 max per night, ground floor or elevator, with an ocean view???\n \nthanks, \nCynthia\nAnchorage, Alaska', 0);

I just want to let you know that we have FREE Internet access in Barra de Navidad.\n The place is "Alice\'s Restaurant" and is located in Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, Next to Piper\'s bar.\n We have the PIZZA HOT all day long.\n SEE YOU GUYS.\n\nThe Barra de Navidad page is:\n\nhttp://www.geocities.com/barradnavidad', 0);

Cuastecomate Bay is next door to Melaque. Eat at Capitan Pelicans next door. A new restaurant! Very good food!!\n\nadios!', 53);

There are wonderful beaches that people go to on day trips from Barra. Melaque, too, just up the beach is great. It is more the working center for the whole area, so while it also is a tourist area, you see alot of the real Mexico while there and Barra. The people are supurbly kind and will go to any lengths to be helpful. I cannot say enough good things about the area except to add, there are many Canadians and Americans around also if you do not speak much Spanish, to aid you, and all the normal amenities can be found if you search for what you want. You will undoubtably miss a great experience if you do not go there. I lived in Melaque four years, a five mile busride from Barra, or a one mile, approx. walk down the beach. And Barra has the most gorgeous sunsets on the planet.', 62);

We were in Melaque just two days ago, wish we were now! We stayed at the Hotel Hidalgo on two occasions and were really happy there. Small family owned pension with rooms ranging from US $ 16.50 to $27.50. It\'s right near the center of town, you can use their kitchen and fridge in the courtyard. The owners. Miguel and Mirtha and their daughter Iris are really sweet people, and don\'t forget their great employee Yolanda. Telephone is (335) 5-50-45, no fax. Av. Migeul Hidalgo #7, Melaque. Remember us to them, I was traveling with my Japanese woman friend Mi-Chan. Happy travels! (Please note my remarks about the restaurant in Cuastecomates elsewhere on Tom\'s site; Cuastecomates and the Capt. Pelican Rest. are not to be missed! Shannon Spence (sspence@worldstar.com)', 29);

Hi Everyone! Just returned last night from Melaque and Cuastecomates, so this news is as timely as you can get it! We spent the nights to Dec. 28 and 29 at the Hotel Royal Costa Sur in Cuastecomates and the room was terrible. No hot water, the shower was broken, and the sink drain was stopped up. We stayed the second night only because I had trouble (New Years) getting anything else in Melaque. Price per night was 720 pesos (US$ 80). Accomodations were a room, and only a room. No meal services. The hotel\'s location is incredible -- the little Cuastecomates cove is enchanting -- but I don\'t recommend staying here. A cab from Melaque is 30 pesos, or a collectivo bus passes by to Melaque for only 3 pesos. \nThe best thing going in Cuastecomates is the Cap\'taine Pelican Restaurant and Bar, operated by Gabriel and Michelle Astie and located right next door to the hotel on the beach. The restaurant has a live saltwater tank for the freshest shellfish and crab imaginable, Michelle is a terrific chef, prices are reasonable, the margaritas and guacamole are to die for, and Gabriel is launching an all-you-can-eat buffet shortly. Sorry I\'m missing it! Great people. \nSnorkeling in the cove is very good. You can go off the beach along the south side prety much as far as you want to go.. It gets good about 200 meters along the shore. Rocky bottom and hard corals encourage lots of diversity and occasional pelagic species drift in for a look, We saw a nice leopard ray in 5-meter deep water the last day. The diving is supposed to be even better around the north side-- hire a boat to take you over. \nHave a wonderful winter! Shannon Spence, Portland, Oregon', 0);

We had no trouble at all getting a room...stayed at Las Brisas and loved it.\nAlex', 46);

Well I have stayed at both places, the most recent being Barra. I am planning to go back to Barra in April, 2001. Differences:Barra has more nightlife, not that it\'s party party or anything, but Ricon has NONE. Barra seems to have a varitey of old and young, English speaking travelers, while Ricon has few(more interaction with locals). The beach at Rincon was nicer, not white sand, but it is in alittle cove with big rock out in the ocean(very pretty), I haven\'t been to Barra since the storm, but it\'s beach was ok too. Both have alot of resturants, but Barra seemed to have a few more (if they are all still there that is!) Hotels are equivalent and service, such as dentist(which we had to visit)are the same. Over all we chose to go back to Barra, but both are a wonderful places, it just depends on what you are looking for.', 62);

You might like neighboring La Manzanilla just north of Barra de Navidad! Quieter and the Bay of Tenacatita is superb! \n\nCheck it out at www.lamanzanillamexico.bizland.com/lamrentals.', 62);

Oh how I agree with your remarks about the hotel. We almost stayed there and were smart enought to preview the room before renting. \n\nEverything you said about the cove is true and accurate including the snorkeling. What a grand place.\n\nJim', 69);

\nHi Tom.\n\nWell 1 week left before I go. I am staying at the Blue Bay.\n\nI need to know if the Manzanillo Airport has a ATM machine, so I can get pesos before I get to the Blue Bay, or does anyone know if I will be able to change my\nCanadian dollars into pesos at the Hotel. \n\nI know its easier to have US dollars to bargain with, but I was hoping not to lose 1/2 my Cdn money and exchange into US if I don\'t have to. \n\nAny recommendations. \n\nRegards\n\nJosee', 0);

There wasn\'t an atm machine at the Manzanillo airport as of November 22. Ask your taxi driver to take you to a casa de cambio once in Manzanillo for pesos.', 74);

No ATM at teh Manzanillo airport. I owuld assime the BBR would accept your $$. There is an ATM at Bancomer bank in Melaque. Right across the street from the bus station!', 74);

Hi Josee: Considering that Blue Bay is North of the airport and the Manzanillo airport is halfway between Manzanillo to the south and Melaque to the North, your best bet is to stop and use the ATM in Melaque. It\'s situated roughly across from the bus station in the bank.\nEnjoy your holiday.\nAndy', 74);

Hi josse,\nDon\'t change your money into American. The mexicans are happy to take pesos. Use the bank machine or the bank in Melaque. I am sure the Blue Bay will change your money but they might not give as good a rate as the bank or your credit card. Happy travels enjoy, Sandra', 74);

Hi-\n\nWe are from Portland also and are looking for a place to stay possibly in the Cuastecomates area. We are not looking for anything fancy or all inclusive, just something comfortable and clean. We are staying one week in Puerto Vallarta and driving south from there and looking for a place in between. Do you have any recommendations? \n\nThanks for any suggestions you may have.\n\nVikki', 69);

Lots of replies to this ... but remember you have a daily limit to what you can withdraw from an ATM. You will need to go to the bank in Melaque (to the counter) to get enough money to pay hotel and many other day to day expenses. The bank is open 7am-1pm.\n\nThe hotel may also take a credit card (sounds like a fancy place). They don\'t in Melaque.\n\nI would go to a commercial bank in US/Canada and get a bunch of pesos before you leave.', 74);

HI...... if you are flying out of a major Canadian airport, you can change your dollars into pesos at the airport, if you go during their hours...... call the airport and ask, that is where I get my first pile of pesos , at the Vancouver airport, but I get them the night before my flight, because my flights out are usually at the crack of dawn (or earlier) and the bank is not open in the airport yet. ENJOY your trip.', 74);

As the Blue Bay is North of Melaque, I would get money from the ATM at the bank in Melaque. I believe there is also a bank machine in the town you go through prior to getting to Melaque (can\'t remember the name). I certainly believe you pay a premium for getting pesos in Canada and especially at an airport. In the past I have taken maybe $50.00 - $100.00 US just in case I need it, and otherwise have relied on the ATM\'s - though if you have it at your disposal, some Canadian traveller\'s cheques as a backup might be a good idea - I took some last year and re-deposited them when I got home. Enjoy your trip!', 74);

Go to the hotels adn find the MOnterrey and call Gloria the owner there. She has a cute litte place in Costacomates. We were going to rent it last year but we had other people with us and then Gloria had medical emergency so it just didn\'t work out. It is clena sleeps a couple, has a thatched roof, parking and is all set up with frig, dishes stove etc. It is behind her own personal home. You would like it I am sure and it is very, very clean. Gloria speaks excellent English and is overly honest.\nBarb', 69);

This is a great way to spend some extra time, breakup your day and to meet other non-spanish speakers while in Melaque.\n\nSharon teaches classes 3 days a week (mon, wen, fri) starting about 10:00am. Her classroom is on the grounds of La Paloma (about 6 blocks south of downtown on the beach). If you show up a little early any day ... you will be asked to sit down and join. (30 pesos for 1 1/2hrs)\n\nSorry I don\'t know Sharons last name ... but Melaque is very informal. Ask for more info at Bananarama while you are having breakfast. They know most everything. ', 0);

Vikki,\nWe spent one of our finest Mexican vacations at Cocos by the Sea in November. They are located near Blue Bay at milepost 19.5 north of Barra de Navidad. The accomodations are beautiful but remote so you need to be self sufficient. The owners, Bob and Cissie Jones are one of the most hospitable couples you\'ll ever meet. The beach is 4 miles long and when we were there, deserted. We swam with lots of fish and even a sea turtle. It is an ideal spot to relax and unwind. There are two self-contained suites for 2-3 people and full kitchen and beautiful pool overlooking the Bay. The rooms are $60-75 night depending on the month. We looked at many places from Barra to Melaque and even Blue Bay. This was the best as it was like having a retreat all to yourselves. One needs to have a car to get to Cocos and then take excursions. Look up www.coconutsbythesea.com. It is located in Boca de Iguanas.\nPs: I\'m origionally from Lake Oswego but live in the San Diego area now.', 69);

Josee,\n Just to let you know that the road from Blue Bay to the Highway is a long hilly 5kms. It is a cobble road that twists and turns its way out to the ocean and would seem much longer than it is. I would suggest a taxi to at least the highway. We didn\'t stay at Blue Bay but were nearby on the same road. I looked at the prices for transportation from the hotel and it seemed quite high. Get a few people to go in with you. A great place to eat shrimp or red snapper is just down the beach from Blue Bay at a palapa who\'s owner is a beautiful young woman named, Jessie. The meals were delicious and even my finicky 11 year old ate the shrimp. The palapa is located at the mouth of the river, I think it\'s called, la Varena. It\'s a beautiful area no matter where you are staying. Have fun!', 8);

stayed there 2 years ago had the time of my life the staff was awesome they were renovating then so it should all be new by now the shows at night were great.Have yourself a bananna momma to take the edge off from the night at the disco and your ready for anything.The snorkelling down towards the restaurant at the end of the beach is great .Bring the guys a beer at the hut and your good to go.Make sure to make your reservations to the restaurant by the disco its awesome.Going again feb 1 but am going to try club maeva. I need a little advice! I have been to Barra once, but stayed with Cabo in an all inclusive package. We are coming to Barra April 10, 2001and staying through the Easter weekend (13-16), can anyone tell me if I have to make Hotel reservations?I\'m looking for a moderate hotel in either Barra or Melaque, with a kitchenette, anything that may have two bedrooms(or cheap enough we can get two rooms?), as there are three of us. Any suggestions?We thought we would just find a Hotel when we arrived, that way we could move around(1 week Barra 1 week Melaque) but I would hate to get there and everything was booked!!! Can\'t wait to get on that plane, 91 days to go!!!!!', 0);

Deborah,\n\nDuring this period, reservations are a MUST (ignore comments to the contrary), in order to get a moderate grade room in either Barra or Melaque.', 88);

josee\n\njust got back from Barra/Melaque. We stopped by Blue Bay and it look really nice. Road is long take a taxi they are cheap. If you really want to spend alot of time in Barra/Melaque you may want to just check out and move there for a few days. You should be able to find a decent room. I would go there one day and check out the hotels and make a reservation. See my comments else where on our trip. Have fun. tenacatita was the best beach.', 8);

Tom\nThanks so much for the site. This was our first trip and the info was invaluable. We started at Cabo Blanco and were disappointed. The facilities were nice but the food was not very good. It was not a value. Better to stay at cheaper place and eat good food just about everywhere else. We moved to Melaque after a few days. We liked Villas Camino del Mar. Alcatraz food was great, gotta try the house chix in stone bowl. Shrimp in avacado was good also. Good massuer just below Alcatraz, 200 pesos for an hour. Table not great but overall good value. Every place we ate on the street in Melaque was very good. Surf taco, Chicken Boy, and Flor Morena for pozole. Had good tamales at small stand on one corner of the square 3.5 pesos each, bring your own pincante. Great pastries stands in square also. Fruit cups on the beach were great. We don\'t get much ripe(cheap)fruit in Alaska. \n\nBoth Barra and Melaque felt very safe and family oriented. We loved it. Beach at Melaque was nice but the beach at Tenacitita was the best. Food at all the palapas was good. Rollo de Mar was excellent. We can\'t wait to go back again and try some of the other areas on your site.\nThanks\nBob', 0);

I have recently returned from a wonderful two week tennis holiday at\nTennis El Palmar located in Melaque. I was reading in what\'s new and came acrossed information about changing American currency to pesos at the ATM machines. This article stated that changing currency at the bank ATM machines was the way to go! The reason for that is it will pay you at bank rate exchange. Then it went on to tell you to find out what your bank charges on a per use basis. I called my bank, it\'s rate is only $.50 per use whether it is in the USA, Mexico, Etc. My questions are : what does the ATM machine in Barra or Melaque charge for using their machine to do the transaction? Also, ias their a bank machine in Barra? If not, where is the best place to get the currency changed to pesos? We\'ll be leaving in a month and want to have things in order. I think this information will have us set to go! Needless to say, we are very excited and this coment section has been wonderful information! Thanks tons! Pam', 39);

I am curious as to what is the daily limit at the ATM machine in Melaque? Also, what is their per rate use charge from their machine? I know my rate from my bank here. But don\'t know what theirs is.(I asked this guestion on 1st timers, not knowing this section was available) Sorry! First timers, but thanks to this section and the comfort it has given me to go, I am sure it will be the first of many trips to come! Pam', 74);

Hi,\nDid anyone recently down there see Eddy (cab 14)? He is the nicest person and we always use him. WE even sent our grandson who we really cherish to PV with him to the airport. I read comments about he beach at Barra. We really like to stay in Barra most of all as it is closer to our friends. Is the beach now to rocky and steep to walk along? The photo I had seen on this site made it look pretty bad. We just don\'t watn to spend extra $ to be on the beach if it\'s not that great this time. My husband really appreciates the people at the Marquez and they are bery nice and it is very, very clean. But I really love the beach, grew up on it. Hi,\nHas anyone stayed at the Barra De Navidad Hotel. Someone said it had been updated. How was the beach in the front of it?', 0);

Not sure what picture you saw ... but the beach in DT Barra is nothing but sand. It\'s that way all the way to Melaque. The points at either end of the bay do have a lot of rocks but I know of no hotels there.', 108);

Hi,\n\nJust returned from 14 days at the Barra de Navidad Hotel. Very clean and reliable. We started out on the street side and it was kind of noisy. We then transfered to the first floor beach side and it was great. However, the hotel is very close to the breaking waves and the building literally shakes when large waves break.\n\nWe didn\'t spend much time on the beach in town...but it looked OK.', 110);

Head up to a beach called Las Brisas.\n\nNorth out of Barra/Melaque on the 200...at apprx milepost 36 head west toward a village called Arroyo Seco. FYI - Hotel usually charges a different price for the ocean side than street side but they just quoted me $68 a night and that is for 5 nights on the road side and 8 on the ocean side. Comes out $398 difference between it and the Marquez.', 0);

$398 difference which way? More or less? How much was the Marquez per night? Just curious for my own trip in 2 weeks. Thanks.', 117);

What price did you hear?\n\nThe hotel is built around a central courtyard and is the epitome of downscale Mexican hotels. The rooms are OK, you might have to ask the manager to haul a bottle of gas up the stairs to fire off the hot water heater. I usually stay here and have had no problems. Be aware However that they lock the front door after 10 PM, so make arrangements before you go partying.\n\nChoose a room as far away from the Disco as you can get. The disco is down the street past the Hotel Sands (to the South East). Rooms on the top floor get the best breeze.\n\nThe family that runs this place tends to be old-fashioned. I\'ve never had a problem crop up regarding safety or honesty. As in any hotel, get a money belt and wear it to bed and take it in with you when you shower and hang it from the shower rod.\n\n\n\nSaludos,\n\n\n\nDavid', 99);

If you\'re in Vancouver, get pesos at the Vancouver Bullion and Currency Exchange, 3 outlets in the city, best rates. If not, try to get pesos at the airport currency exchange (probably higher rates) or try at your local bank. Failing that, if you have a Visa or similar account with a major Canadian bank you can suck pesos out of most instant teller machines using your Visa or access card. Banamex in Melaque worked well a week ago. As to limits on daily withdrawal, I watched one lady take out 3000 pesos with no problem and I withdrew 1500 on different occasions. Be aware that the symbol for pesos is $. The $3000 lady above thought she would get american dollars out the machine because of the symbol, forgetting, I guess, that she was in Mexico.\n\nHave a great trip.\n\nPS. If you get trapped in Blue Bay with nothing to do, persuade someone to take you to Melaque/Barra de Navidad or Tenacatita. things would be cheaper, real people.', 74);

Yvonne asks about contact numbers for Hotel Bahia. We\'ve just returned from Melaque. Didn\'t stay at Hotel Bahia but talked to a woman from Castlegar who did. We\'re just back from Melaque with the same bus problem. Not wanting to travel in the dark (145 or 4 am) we took the Flecha Amarilla 8 am second class bus, Melaque to PV, 110 pesos each. It took about 5.5 hours compared to the 3.5 to 4 hours that the first class bus took on the way down. More or less the same class of bus with washroom, air conditioning and a movie (if you have ear plugs take them as the movie was annoyingly LOUD). It stopped more often and went off highway 200 into Tomatlan at La Cumbre then back to main highway about 1/2 hour later. Some seats had the recline lever broken. Across the street from Flecha Amarilla is another bus station -- both advertise Primera Plus (which only seems to indicate first class, not the name of the bus line). They have a bus which goes at 9:15 am.', 4);

No good ideas. Are you staying in Manzanillo? \nBeware that Melaque would not be very wheel chair friendly as most streets are cobble and the sidewalks have unexpected elevation changes and ledges.', 64);

Marquez is $398 less but not on the beach. We are in our 50\'s and it\'s a easy walk like maybe 5 minutes.', 117);

Try the Barra De Navidad Hotel. THere was a couple that used to stay there all the time because the wife had to use a wheel chair and she couldn\'t walk at all. \nA nice trip from Barra is up to Colima. The cab driver Eddy (cab #14) speaks English. For around $100 he will drive you there for the day and then come back that evening. There are some nice museums there, a beautiful church and then a side trip over to Camela is nice and it is just a short drive. Hope you enjoy your trip. We leave on Jan 24th and return on Feb 6th. dear tom...\n\nu may not remember me but i wrote u way back in early 1999 asking questions about barra de navidad and u replied to me personally and u were quite helpful...well lo and behold i now live here and in dec. 12, 2000 was my one year here...i want to write a couple of things in your barra visitors comment page and do hope you can post them...maybe as two entries...please let me know if you can or i'll just check ur site and see...following are my comments...thanks :)\n\ntom\ni want so to write about a couple of things, one is a place that has never gotten mentioned, that i know of, and the other is to state a few things about the tourists situation...please if you will allow me...\n\nfirst of all the place that i highly recommend is probably one of, or the most fun place to visit in barra/hualtuco...it is the Cri Cri bar and resturant...it is a Botanero, which is a place that if you drink,even soft drinks, you can order food for no cost from 1 p.m til like 5 p.m. And order as often as you want...They serve, and change daily, fish, cerviche, tacos, sopes, oyster, carne asada, puerco (pork), jaibas, (like crab) etc...they have live shows Thur., Fri., and Sat. nights...it is a real peek into how the locals live and fiesta and the price is right...cerveza 10 pesos, vino tinto 10 pesos...they close at 10 p.m. so be sure and check it out when in Barra. They are at the entrance to Barra on the Barra side of the Pemex.\n\nSecond...I guess this is maybe a gripe to and some advice to tourists...please please, when visiting Mexico don't think it is Canada, the U.S., or anywhere else u might have been before...it is uniquely Mexico...no maybe things aren't as sanitary as u are use to, maybe the service is slower than ur use to, and the children and vendors that sell, don't become annoyed or angry with them...that is there job...how many of your children are on the streets and beach from 9 in the morning until like 9 at night trying to help their families survive...i say surrive because realize that many of these waiters and waitresses only make like 40-50 pesos for a 4 p.m. til may 2-3 a.m. shift, that's like $4.35 U.S per DAY!. it probably costs u that much to start ur car to go to and from work...so just imagine what these vendors must make...so whether service is not up to what u get at "home" don't hesitate to tip and treat them like they are equals...that's what they are, and if you don't like things here and understand that they are "that way" then don't be rude to the workers, and maybe not come back or come to begin with...i get so tired of hearing all this complaining and most of you are only coming for a lousy 7 days!! I recently spoke with Tracye and Peggy Ross, owners of the Crazy Cactus, and friends of mine...i was in and said, "oh i see your rental bikes are all out," they explained that they quit renting because visitors were becoming so irresponsible as far as what exactly their obligation was when renting things, and would often tell them that they would not pay for a flat tire, or a foot strap on a surf board they rented, or a problem with a car they rented...so they quit renting bicycles, and giving thought to other rentals. People would just tell them, "when I get home I'll just cancel that charge on my credit card," which is required for any rental. Come on u guys...everyone here is just trying to make a living...give them a break...or maybe not visit...yes, i would be more than happy to respond to any and all mails. \n\njim bray', 0);

I have not been to Barra yet, but will be on the 10th of February, as a first timer. I plan to partake at Bannana\'s. I have read three different things about the reopening after the storm. One is that they reopened on the top floor of The Hotel Barra de Navidadon the top floor. Second is that they are open an are acrossed the street from the Bancomer Bank, up from the bus stop ( is this where the Hotel Barra de Navidadis located?). And thirdly,on the Bannas site, that they were relocated on the top floor of the Hotel Barra de Navidad as of October, but planned to be reopened elsewhere by the first of December. Anyone know? Hi,\nI talked about the Barra De Navidad Hotel to my husband and he said it was wheelchair accessible. Actaully there are not steps at all going into it now that he brought that to my attention I thought I would pass it on to you. enjoy you visit. Did you read the post?\n\n\nBarb', 64);

The most convenient ATM machine to use is the one in Cihuatlan; it\'s right on the highway. The charge per use is what YOUR bank charges; ask them. The maximum amount you can withdraw, I am not sure, but it is a few hundred dollars--at least as much as you would care to have on your person at any time. Major expenses such as hotel and expensive restaurants can be paid with credit card.\n\nTom Penick\nThe Pacific Coast of Mexico', 74);

The charge for using the ATM is only what your bank charges, but .50 sounds low. 1.00 is more typical. It\'s a per use charge so it is not a significant charge provided you make a fairly large withdrawal. There is an ATM machine in Cihuatlan which is on your way from the airport to Barra. If you miss that one, there is one in Melaque, which is near Barra. There is not an ATM in Barra. The best place to change currency to pesos is at a bank, but there is not a bank in Barra either. There is a money exchange which has slightly steeper rates.', 39);

Thank you very much!!!!! We have looked at a few hotels on this web sight, something along the lines of Bungalows Malloca or Bungalows Orientales in Melaque. We are going down for two weeks but I think we are just going to reserve the first week in Melague(if possible) April 10 to April 17. We are looking for a two bedroom or two rooms with a kitchenette for $30 to $50 usd. It doesn\'t have to be fancy, just clean. A little place to sit outside, maybe a small pool would be great! We have been to other parts of Mexico and are used to staying in "smaller places". I hope you have a wonderful time, we wish it was time for us to go!!! Please reserve the room under: Mrs. Deborah Milbrath- Please let me know if you need any other information and thank you again!!!', 88);

We were in Melaque and Rincon de Guayabitos in November and liked them both. Both had great beaches and good restaurants. I thought the scenery at Melaque was slightly prettier but both were great. It\'s tough choosing between them, but I think we may go back to Melaque next year.\n\nOne thing to consider is the trip from Puerto Vallarta. You don\'t mention how you are travelling but we went by bus. Guayabitos is less than an hour away from the PV bus station, while the trip to Melaque was over five hours. The deluxe bus was fine but it turned out not to be direct. A side trip to Tomatlan over unpaved roads and back again to the highway took over an hour.', 62);

Easy - once you get tot Barra - contact Eddy the cab drive #14. He will take you to all those places. He speaks English, is honest and caring. We took the bus tour and had two young guys who drove the bus the second time we went, they stopped in Colima bought themselves some homemade booze and dropped us off at the square and told us to be back at a certain time.We wouldn\'t go with them. If you go with Eddy you can also bring another couple and the price comes out the same as the bus. Once you get to Barra you will met other American/Canadians that would love to do a trip with you. THere is also another group tour group out of Manzanillo which would be very nice to go on. They are very professional. We saw them and followed their tour guide around (whenwe went with the Barra Tour group). Hectours, Carlos Rivera I would strongly recommend them as they do know the history of everything and actually stay with you and are very, very professional. 333-31707 is their tel#. I will be staying at BlueBay March 07-14th , along with a group of hormonally addled 18/19year old boys.We selected this hotel simply on \'the best bang for the buck\' criteria , and I must admit the somewhat isolated location seemed like a good idea, but would love to hear from anyone with any tips/advice/comments on what to expect.Hopefully there will be other march breakers there at this time- the lads are particularly concerned about the likelihood of young[preferably nubile] female guests, so if anyone out there is going to be at Blue Bay during the school break, we\'d love to hear from you. Also does anyone know about the possibility of renting a van to accomodate 9 passengers, or hiring a taxivan/driver during our stay? - I definitely want to get these guys out and about seeing something other than the resort, and this seems like the best way to go. Would appreciate any input from readers of this fantastic site - only 50 more sleeps! Cheers Sara', 0);

Hello Maria - I was happy to hear such rave reviews of Blue Bay , since we are planning a trip there in March, along with a group of 18year old guys. Do you think they\'ll have good time and do you have any tips for us? How easy is it to get around the area or do you usually stay around the resort? How\'s the food - and hopefully it\'s a continual supply - given the non-stop eating habits of these boys. Does the hotel appeal to a younger crowd - we really don\'t know what to expect as I\'m not usually an all - inclusive fan, but it seemed like the best bet with this bunch; and I\'m sure we\'ll have a great time anyway. This is out of my trip report. Ray has reasonably good snorkeling equipment included in the price. He also rents mountain bikes. Hi everyone, thanks for all the useful information last week. We have been pondering where to stay in Melaque/Barra and dont\' care if it\'s a hole in the wall. I tried to make reservations at a few hotels but they don\'t take them because they don\'t take credit cards. Another hotel, but this time in PV said in very rapid spanish that I must send $35 american dollars to them before the reservation is confirmed.... I have come to the conclusion that the lower rate hotels don\'t take that many reservations so we will probably be okay just arriving in Barra/Melaque with none. I will be arriving in Barra Saturday Feb 17th and staying till the 26th.... Do you think I am correct to assume that I will be able to find a budget room somewhere?? Do you think the Posado Pacifico will be all booked up? I\'m stressing about whether a reservation is necessary or not. The same goes for in PV for my first night.... do you think I will be able to find a hotel there??? Any comments would be appreciated....\nSarah', 0);

Been to both. I would agree the Melaque/Barra/San Patricio area is probably going to be more fun and agreeable for most americans and canadians. Boca, La Manzanilla, Tenacatita, and Cuasta are all close and add a lot of extras. \n\nRincon is closer to PV as someone said, but closer yet is Bucerias which is also nice. And you are just down the road from Punta Mita which has some fun things too. If you go to Rincon, stop at San Pancho Beach -- look on the Map for San Francisco (I was told Pancho is a nickname for Francisco.)\n\nAll these areas are just fantastico.\n\nJim C', 62);

Sarah, this will be my first trip. I, too, called the Posada Pacifico. They told me to send a check for $22.00 American dollars. So I went to the bank and had them give me one of their bank checks and I mailed it off. Along with the check I told them, as well as in the phone conversation, how long I would be in the area, but I didn\'t know how many nights I would be staying with them. They said if I sent the check, I would be guarenteed as many nights stay that I wanted and the room would be waiting for me on the first date of arrival. After reading numerous articals in this comment section, I gather that because of the close proximity of all the towns that maybe the traveler\'s jump around alot during their stay. So maybe it is best not to commit to staying at just one place during your planned time there, unless it is a holiday or festive time. Once we have all already made a trip, then we will all know what to do on our next one. Because it sounds as if it is going to be a place I will want to frequent! We will be there February 10th. Hope I have been of help. Pam', 177);

Dear Sarah,\nThis is a common practice in Mexico, to have you send a money order for a deposit to reserve a room. I have done it with small hotels in PV and other places. They usually hand you back your money order when you arrive as it costs them to cash it. You can cash it at your bank when you arrive home, as the sender.\nEnjoy Your Trip, Sandra', 177);

I have not seen Las Palmas restaurant on the beach in Melaque mentioned, first road to the left after the bank. Always has the cheapest beer on the beach, and it has a loyal following of both Mexicans and Canadians and Americans, dating back thirty years, give or take a little. Around four or so every evening, gringos congregate to exchange war stories and info. They play bingo for pesos once a week, or they did last year anyhow, and sometimes you get lucky and Checo and friends are passing the guitar and singing, in the late evenings or Sunday afternoon.\nEvery year Checo hosts an international chess tournament also. Been known to host a few friendly afternoon poker games also.\nThese folks are all always helpful!\nAnd if you go there, give them a big hello for Loca Judy!\n!', 0);

I am considering a trip to Barra for the month of June. I have read the threads. I would appreciate any info on an inexpensive place to stay. Also any info on surf jetty, bay or inexpensive panga fishing would be , again, appreciated. As I have stressed, because I am a 52 yr old teacher w/more time than money, cost is a BIG consideration. One more question, dose any one have any experiance w/Bus travel from Matamoros to Barra. thanks: david', 0);

There seems to be a Puesta del Sol in many towns. Yes there is a one in Melaque. It is one of the nicer places (of many) and cost about $32 last Nov. It\'s on the central waterfront.\n\nThe literal translation "putting" must be "setting of the sun" which is common on the Pacific coast.', 186);

Just when I thought I knew for sure which was which, this last comment through me back into ??? If you read this comment section, they do alot of contridicting each other. Maybe I shold ask this question : Where is the Hotel Barra de Navidad? Barra or Melaque? The answer to that will clear it up, as I do know Bananas is in the Hotel Barra de Navidad!', 104);

Pam, Bannanas is now in Hotel Barra wich is in Barra De Navidad on the Beach. I have read Bananarama is in Melaque and I have heard it to is good.', 104);

\nBananas has been owned and operated by a Barra de Navidad native (Maria Diaz, see above post) since 1983. It is on the 2nd floor of the Hotel Barra de Navidad which is in Barra de Navidad (makes sense doesn\'t it!). They are open from 8am til noon for breakfast and from 6pm til 10pm for dinner. It is the original restaurant with the original name that was started on the lagoon, moved to the beach after the 95 earthquake and now in it\'s 3rd location due to the beach erosion damage.\nI hope they have run out of bad luck and remain at the present location which has a lot more space and a really great panoramic view of the bay.', 104);

Maria: I snorkeled at Tentacatita but don\'t remember any hotels around. How was the Blue Bay - did they have kitchenttes and what were the rates. How do we contact them??? I fell in love with that whole area, this will be my second but not last of many future trips in that direction. Debi Wahl.', 146);

Thank you all so much! I stand on this one...Bananas is in Barra & banarama is in Melaque. I will be sue to visit them both! Pam', 104);

I too am interested in Cab 14 Eddy. When will he be on the internet site? I looked today, he is not there? Pam', 106);

I fell in love with Barra, and at my hotel I hated to hear the complaints - those that want everything to "be like home" ought to stay there. What ever happened to "when in Rome, do as the Romans?" Somewhere tourists (often Americans) forgot the purpose of travel is to see, taste, smell, feel, DIFFERENT cultures, people, places. It is our differences that make us unique and special and turn our travels into adventures - if we were going to see all the same stuff, what would be the point? Someday I may be lucky enough to live in Barra, hopefully being able to "blend" with the culture that is so sweet and special. An Irish lass with a Mexican heart.', 131);

We were just in Barra and spent 3-nights at the Hotel Sands. I would NOT recommend it. Terrible room....old and decaying building.\n\nThe Hotel Barra de Navidad is where we moved to and it was much better for just a little more money per night. And, the entry to the hotel is a ramp. So if you procured a first floor room, you would be in pretty good shape. Plus, the Hotel Barra de Navidad is right on the beach with a nice pool and restaraunt. Be sure to have breakfast at La Zarca across the street.......\n\nThe Hotel Sands is way down hill on the lagoon side. Actually pretty far from all the action (restaraunts, vendors) where as the Hotel Barra de Navidad is right in the heart of the town.\n\nE-mail if you want better detail.', 181);

Going to Barra in Mid Feb with my 11 yr old daughter looking for a decent place to stay for a reasonable price. Im spending 66 cent dollars (Canadian) so every bit helps. I had previously heard that "the Sands" was ok, but apparantly not so! Can you reccomend any others, good restaraunts, activities, things that would interest an 11 yr old etc.Is there good snorkeling off the beach at Barra. If not where? Thanks in advance G.S.', 181);

I don\'t think the previous comment suggests that teachers lack neither commitment nor professionalism. it is just remarking on the tendency to forget that many equally hard working and dedicated folk receive substantially less financial reward for their efforts.\nIf Dave has more time than money, then he is a hell a lot further ahead than I am, as I have neither !!!!\nA debate for another forum perhaps?', 194);

There is no good snorkeling along the beaches because the visibility is terrible from stiring of the sand. Barra usually has a good shore break that really stirs the sand. The surf is fun to play in tho if you are used to that kind of thing. Even have surf-able waves on occasion. Almost everyone goes to Tenicatita for snorkeling but it is about 45 mins north and the "tours" leave from Melaque. They may have tours from Barra? The grounds of the Sands are nice but I\'ve never looked at the rooms. They are on the lagoon and not the ocean side.', 181);

La Paloma is listed on this web site if you want a look, they posted the link on the original message. It is located about 5-6 blocks south/east of central Melaque on the beach. The address is probably in San Patricio.', 171);

Easy enough to fish the surf right in Barra, catching is more difficult.\nStandard rates for a Panga US$20/hr although you can pay less you\'ll get less same as anything.\nDo you have your own gear?\nIf not you\'re going to be disappointed what you find aboard Pangas is a joke or worse.\nEmail for details of what you need Tackle-wise.\nBusses run everywhere all the time.', 194);

We go to Mexico for the sunshine, yes the double dose ot it. First the people always put a little sunshine in your day, especially the children. I met a very old American lady one day in Melaque and she was riding a bike. SHe was there by herself and said if the people in her hometown were as friendly as the people in Mexico, she would be at home. With all the water problems and the lack of luxuries that we Americans and Canadian have it always amazes me how clean the little school children are on the way to school. I know a lot of the women work there just like in our country as you see them at the hotels etc. I just don\'t see how they do it with limited funds and time. The kids always seem so happy. \nOh, I almost forgot the other sunshine is that it is always sunny and wonderful. If you haven\'t been there, go!', 131);

I spent 5 beatiful days in Melaque last December. We arrived in town with no idea of where to stay. After a look at all the accomodations along the beach in town we decided on the Monterrey. It was a very good choice. If you are staying for more than 5 days ask for a reduced rate. The two of us paid $300 peso per night for a room facing the bay. We saw all the sun rises and sets from the terrace.\n \nThe room was clean enough with two double beds and a good bathroom. Outside each room on the large and breezy marble tiled terrace there is a table with four chairs. In the hot afternoon\'s it was wonderful to sit on the terrace and get out of the sun. \n\nThe Monterrey has that old Mexican charm that keeps one going back. I will be there again in April.', 126);

Thanks David, any suggestions that you can make will be much appreciated! Muchas Gracias G.S.', 181);

Try Bungalows Mar Vida, Marsha Ewing who speaks English as she is a Texan.\n\nmarsha@ciber.net.mx\n\nFor 2 people it would be $45 US and when I last spoke with her she had vacancies. Her rooms are large, with good fans, complimentary water, kitchenettes and a pool.\n\nThe other suggestion if you don\'t need a kitch is the Delphin Hotel - which can be found on this website.\n\nMelanie', 177);

We have visited Barra since the storm, and they are busy repairing what they can of the beach. They lost about 20 feet of beachfront down at the end, and it will take time for that to come back. The locals say it will, but how long I don\'t know.\n\nYou can still walk along the beach, the part that was ruined is down by Popeye\'s and the seawall. A lot of that was broken up and pulled in to the water, so we did not swim much there.\n\nThe beachfront down by The Barra Hotel which you spoke of is just the same as it was before.\n\nHave a great vacation.\n\nMelanie', 108);

Thinking about going to Barra and Melaque first two weeks of May.Any idea on how the weather is at that time of year? Cabo was $160 US per night inclusive. They did not have any non inclusive. The Marquez is near the Cabo Blanco and looked nice. We meet some people who were staying there for 3 weeks. They said they were paying $33 US, not on the beach. The one below Bananas looked ok but don\'t know rates. Orientales in\nMelaque was nice and recommended by friends who have stayed there. I guess its reasonable maybe under $70 but I don\'t know for sure.\n\nEverywhere was busy when we were there over new years. things started to clear out a bit after the 3rd. Still lots of Mexican nationals on vacation. Not sure when kids go back to school. Even at the busiest i never felt crowded or uncomfortable. Rooms where all booked over new years. We moved to Camino del mar and they had some rooms. The other places did as well. My gut\nfeeling is that you could probably just show and find something suitable. But on the other hand I would hate to be there without a room. I would try to get something arranged for at least a couple of nights then look around. you could always move then. Don\'t stress to much you will have a blast. I am ready to go again after being back in the SE Alaska winter.\n\nBob', 92);

We just go our for the Marquez. They pretty much speak Spanish so it\'s a little harder to get a response. We arrive on Jan 24th. If you like I could get them to email you back. They do have a email but I ended up getting Edie the cab driver to make mine for me. He speaks English and probably could call them for you. He\'s cab #14 so use him when you get there. People down there are so loyal it\'s important not to forget them while you are there.\nHis email is eduar580@yahoo.com.mx\nTheir rates are the Santos Marquez ad under hotels. They have a pool and it a night watchman and it is very clean and they are helpful.', 177);

We stayed a couple of nights at the Orientales last year and they are cheaper than the Marquez and are right on the beach. We also stayed at the Camino Del Mar. It was very nice and next door to the Orientales. I enjoyed both places but I go for the people and and the beach.. I would go back to either one depending on my budget. I don\'t know the price for the Camino Del Mar for just a room. Camions sells beautiful pottery, it seems to have a better quailty than most you see there. We had another couple and had at the most beautiful suite, 2 beds, 2 baths first floor by the pool and overlooking the ocean. Very, very nice and it was $100 us a night if booked for a month but shared it was only $50. \nEither place you will enjoy the people. Caminos is usually a little more difficult to get in as they have the same clientle that are repeat customers. We spent most our time going over to Barra on the little local bus. We have been going to Barra for about 5 years now so we will probably alway stay in Barra.\nMy husband knows which truck brings the pastry etc. We like the simple live we have down there. The biggest decision is where to eat and checking the email from home. I just can\'t let the work go so I have to keep tabs on it from there. Pretty sick.', 92);

hello,\n\nWe\'re two university students heading to Barra February 19th-27th and we\'re wondering where the most economical, yet safe place is to stay. The village of Tenacatita on the northern tip of Tenacatita bay has great snorkeling at Playa Moro.The turnoff to the village is 20 miles north of Melaque off of Hwy 200. Can\'t miss it! Bum a ride or someone in the village does van tours over there, or take a cab and set up a RT.', 235);

Several of the tour sites have search engines that check for the lowest rates of different car agencies. Reserve in the US. Keep a copy of the reservation when you pick up your car, and remember you will pay in pesos so know what the conversion rate is. Weekly rates will be lower. Also read the driving section on the main menu of this site.', 242);

Hello Barry,\n\nI certainly don\'t want to speak for Maria, but was at Blue Bay with our family 2 years ago, and from all accounts it hasn\'t changed much (still great !). A few comments if I may ..\n\nThe evening shows were excellent, and our favourite part was that it\'s an outdoor theatre. Other places we have been too, have indoor setups which significantly take away from the flavour. One other tip. Unless your an exhibitionist at heart, I wouldn\'t sit in the front row for the shows or you will end up a participant ! I learned this after hoolaing (complete with grass skirt) with my shirt off in front of the whole crowd.\n\nRegarding the jungle tour. Make sure your guide can speak English (unless you speak Spanish). We asked, and were told that he did, which we later learned meant Yes or No and that\'s about it. We missed out on quite a bit, but it did make it interesting (lots of hand gestures).\n\nOne last item. If possible, I would recommend upgrading to a suite. If you have a brochure, these are the ocean front rooms to the far left (looking in from ocean) beside the tennis courts. You have your own private terrace for sunbathing, and the sunsets are amazing ! As I recall the cost to upgrade isn\'t too bad. Worth checking out.\n\nCheers,\nJim', 146);

Great site! Been reading through the e-mails but none quite cover what info I\'m after. \nMy family, including my husband and 13yr old female and 16yr old male, are travelling to Mexico for first time for two weeks in March. Been studying tourist books, "Lonely Planet" etc. and talking to people. I guess I\'m trying to figure out what would work best for us. At first we were considering somewhere out of Puerto Vallarta but received comments about being too touristy.\nDon\'t want crowded and touristy but not bohemian either...alittle bit of luxury would be nice. Since we don\'t have the luxury of lots of time, I guess we\'re looking for fun, teenager-friendly, affordable, beautiful setting, cultural, accommodations with swimming pool, on the beach, jacuzzi would be nice, clean...some have recommended Barra de Navidad, others Melaque, Bungalows Laguna in particular.\nDon\'t want crowded and touristy but not bohemian either...alittle bit of luxury would be nice. Does either Barra de Navidad or Melaque sound right for what we\'re looking for? Any comments, suggestions or recommendations greatly appreciated.', 0);

Hi! My husband and I are going to Melaque Feb 5 to Mar. 1. We were wondering about good, nice, clean, safe accomodations. The place you said sounds nice. How much were the rooms? Did they have kitchenettes? Where is this place in relation to the Bungalos Orientales, if you know? Dod reservations seem to be needed or would ther be rooms when we arrive? Are the units 1 or 2 bedroom and how large? SOunds like you had fun, we hope to also. Thanks for any orther advise you can give. Reply soon please. Thanks, Brenda', 92);

My husband and I are heading to Melaque from Feb 5 to Mar 1. We are wondering what are good places to stay. We like clean, safe, kitchenette, pool, good beach, and not too big, fairly close to things.. Any ideas anyone has would be great. Should we book a room for a couple nights, then go look around, or just go and see what;s what? We arrive 4:00ish so probably a room upon arrival would be good. Any other thoughts, , ideas, places to see, eat, etc. are great. We want to have fun but be safe. Thanks very much. Brenda', 0);

Entertainment in both towns for teenagers is sun, beach, people, food and maybe a little shopping ... just like yours minus the booze. You won\'t find Banana Boat rides, ParaSailing, tours around the bay, sailboard rentals. There is very little live music and I doubt if you\'ll find a Jacuzzi.\n\nBohemian sounds like something created by Gringos who want to live cheaply but I guess that would be close. Melaque is a working class town with very few frills. Barra is just a little fancier.\n\nHeres a link to my trip ... lots of pictures.\nhttp://sviweb.sccd.ctc.edu/melaque/', 247);

There is a lot to do in PV. As with all places it can be touristy. I love PV but you hove to know where to go. The first time was a bear. Buy the Moon travel handbook Pacific Mexico by bruce whipperman. I am going to Malaque this time to Mexico (first time) for something different (Usually go north). I have been using PV as a starting point since there is a lot of air in and out. If you are interested I will send you a letter that I sent to my cousin that was going to PV for tne first time.', 247);

Hi:\n\nMy family and I just returned today from Melague. I would recommend Bungalows Laguna Del Tule. It is at the far end of Melaque towards Barra. It is the last Hotel before Barra, about a 20 minute walk to the centre of Melaque. It meets all the requirements you listed and is the best priced. As in most things in Mexico, everyone seems to pay a different price. You can get a one bedroom unit with full kitchen for between $30-40 Canadian a night (200-300 pesos). In Melaque you will pay from $500-800 pesos for the same thing. Do not drink the tap water here, they are on a well, but the rooms, as do all rooms in hotels come with bottled water.\n\nThis hotel is owned by Fidel and his wife, Blanca. They both speak english and are very nice and acommodating. They currently have 30 units in 5 buildings and are still building. If you are in the new buidling closest to the pool and beach you will have to put up with construction noise. It starts at about 8:00 am. we found it to be a minor incovience. Great sunsets and is the only area on the whole bay that has the sun the longest. Big waves, you have to be causious when entering the surf. \n\nThey have a small store right there that has all your basics.\n\nLots of good resturants in Melaque and some within 4 blocks to the hotel. One I would mention is Gonzales, about a ten minute walk. It is not well marked. It is on the second floor above a grocery meat store, the building is turquise. Fidel can give you directs. The place is always empty except on Wednesday night when they have the gringo special for $40 pesos and all the retired snow birds go. Do not go this night, it is not worth it. Four of us would eat great food with beer and sodas for $165-175 pesos, $25 Canadian. I would recommend the fish soup, fish filet and the prawns (camarones). Hope you like fish!\n\nUse the Bank machine in Melaque for pesos. Last week the rate was between $6.41-6.48 pesos to the $1.00.\n\nLots of long term people staying there who can give you directions and info if you stay there.\n\nIf you have any questions do not hesiate to email me our you can phone at 250-656-3746.\n\nHave fun and good luck!\n\nSteve McIntyre', 249);

Best rate is in Mexico. Ten days ago I got 6.10 peso to the Cdn$ at the Victoria Aiport. Next day at the Vancouver airport the Royal Bank Exchange was only giving 5.70 peso. Next day I got 6.46 at the ATM in Melague. You will need $250 peso to get a cab from the airport to Barra/Melaque.\n\nGood Luck and have fun, Steve', 74);

Hi Wendy,\nI have spent alot of time in PV and love it. I also spent time in Melaque and loved it. They are totally different though. Teen agers might enjoy the more extensive shopping in PV if thats what they are into. Your vacation would be more ecnomical spent in Melaque. The beauty of PV is in old town across the bridge. The restraunts shops beach is more the feel of Mexico. We now stay in old town PV when we go as we find the prices somewhat reasonable there, hotel zone is expensive. If you choose Melaque don\'t miss a side trip to Tenacatita to snorkel that was worth the whole trip to me. Snorkelling around PV has never been that good when I\'ve been there. Hope this helps & in place of luxury think of the experience Mexico will offer. A pool is nice a jacuzzi is a bonus not needed though as the Mexican sun will keep you warm. Asta La Vista Sandra', 247);

Hi Wendy\n\nJust got back from Melaque 2 weeks ago. We were there with 3 families for 3 weeks over Xmas. It was our 1st trip to Mexico, and like you were not too into the tourist thing and yet wanted clean and and safe. From what I\'ve seen, there are a number of places that are clean and Melaque (and probably Barra) are very safe. What does differ seems to be the level at which the different places seem to be kept up. The people are reallly friendly and if you don\'t mind a bit run down, all is OK. Normally we are fine with this and usually travel with a backpacker\'s mentality. However, we lucked into a higher end place that worked better for us as a group and got spoiled. If you are going in March and don\'t mind spending a bit more, you might really enjoy Villas Camino del Mar. Discounts are in effect after high season, and more if you stay longer than a week. Another nice thing about this place is that the beach seemed cleaner and was less crowded than closer to town - yet we were only about 4 blocks away. Laguna del Tulle looked nice but is a longer walk into town which wouldn\'t be as good for your teens(people we knew with teens stayed there and found it a bit too far).\n\nMelaque was wonderful and Barra was great and just a short 3.5 peso bus ride away. We had 9 kids between us between the ages of 6 and 15 and all enjoyed the trip. Melaque is so safe that the 10 years olds were OK to walk into town on their own - and we let the 13-15 year olds go to Barra together on their own. They liked to shop there and get some food. They seemed to need the diversion. These town are fairly quiet in terms of action so we did do day trips out to Custecomates, Tenacatita (snorkeling) , La Manzanilla and even went to the new waterslides which were amazingly clean and hardly anyone there - at Xmas! Like most teens, they had the most fun when they were with friends, or other kids they met so they could swim, bodysurf or shop together. At night they could go into the town of Melaque and eat at the various taco stands and the cakeman and grab a paleta(ice cream) and because it was dark and there were lots of people, they could feel like they were part of the action. Another thing that some of the kids got into (including my husband) is fishing like the locals do. You buy or make a reel with line, add a hook and put on an anchovie(washes up on the beach) and try fishing along with dozens of other locals at the town center part of the beach. Just follow the pelicans. This is at sunrise. Fish like jack and small tuna are fairly easy to catch and then you have dinner!\n\nHave fun', 247);

I have only seen one negative about cab rides. Are all of them about the same rates and safety is a must!! Non-alcohol driver preferred. Any tips out there? I will be there 13 days and would like to feel comfortable in my travel choices from airport. To Melaque, Lamanzanillo, Manzanillo and Tentacatita. Pam', 106);

Hi! It was great to read your comments re:Melaque. My husband and I returned from Manzanillo end of Dec. We had stayed at Karmina Palace and found it very busy. We then rented a car and went to Isla De Navidad to golf. From there we went to Melaque on the advice of a couple we met on the golf course at Isla. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Maya Rest, (owned by a Vancouver couple) and then viewed a hotel and condo complex next door to the restaurant. Hotel is called Villas Camino del Mar. It looked very nice and the condos are brand new, ready for rental within the next few months. We have been advised that the condo rates are $1400-$1500 for two weeks. Does that seem fair ?\nHow did you find staying in Melaque ? How long did you stay in Melaque ? Any info that you could provide would be extremely helpful.\nIf you have time, it would be great to hear from you.', 249);

Hi ! Just read your response on Barra/Melaque. We only spent a short time in Barra at Cabo Blanco. Woudn\'t receommend it. Rooms are clean, but food is average. Let\'s put it this way - If I was going to that property for a week or two week period, I would be disappointed.\nWe are really interested in Melaque and any info that you may have would be greaty appreciated.\nWe looked at the hotel rooms at Villas Camino del Mar and as well the new condos the owner has built which are ready for rental in the next few months. Did you have the opportunity to view those?\n\nYou mentioned Bungalows Laguna Del Tule. Is there a web site for this complex? How would you rate these ? Is it on the beach ?\nWe look forward to your reply.\nRegards\nBette Riske', 92);

regarding Hotel Monteray.\nI have emailed twice trying to get rates and accomodation information without receiving a response.\nI find it frustrating that the hotel would not reply to my enquiry.\nBette Riske', 33);

I\'m building 2 rooms in Barra de Navidad, they are of "palapa"(palm tree),and is located in Alice\'s Restaurant on the main street near the ocean & the lagoon, so, you can rent a room for not a lot of pesos.\n The place has access to internet conection to theirs costumers.\n You can e-mailme for a reservation any time.', 194);

Thank you.', 238);

Two Canadian friends have been living in Guadalajara since Nov.\nThey are planning to visit me in Melaque for a few days while I\'m there & are looking for suggestions for a hotel in Melaque/Barra/La Manzanilla that will accept their dog.(a well-trained black lab). They\'re looking for something in the $30US price range with a private bathroom. Any suggestions or experience with this? Thanks.', 0);

How do you get this site in English?', 238);

hI... we are going north of PV this trip (March) to a smaller fishing village called Sayulita. We have been to PV, as well as Mazatlan, the Baja & Zihuatanejo. The last was very nice and magical, but we decided this time to try for a less crowded calmer Mexico with a chance to walk without being stressed out by the timeshare salespeople. We are hoping Sayulita will be that place, and we can still take the bus into PV if we need noise! It is only about an hour north by bus. I think Barra de Navidad would be equally as nice, not sure if they have timeshare salesmen, but I have heard nothing but nice things about that area on this message board. Just pick a place and then start asking questions. THis is an excellent place to find information. ENJOY your trip.,,,,, wherever you go !!! You really cannot go wrong, Mexico is magical almost everywhere (except cancun !!!!!)', 247);

Hi\n\nJust a note on the ATM. In Melaque, it is the best way to get money. Be sure however to increase your daily limit before you leave home so you can take out more than x$ at one time. It is also a good idea to have more than one kind of way to get money. ie. 2 debit cards, a credit card and lastly, a few travelers cheques. It you use travelers cheques at the bank in Melaque, make sure you grab a number from the machine before sitting down and then go the desk on your left. There you tell them how much in travelers cheques you want to cash, show your passport , get a receipt from them and THEN stand(sit) in line for the regular bank tellers. Many people have been caught sitting in line just to be sent to the side desk 1st.', 74);
