Hi Tom, Four of us are booked in to the Magnihotel for 2 weeks at the end of January, 2001. This will be our 3rd time back to this hotel. The last 2 stays at the Crown Pacific were awesome. When we saw that the hotel was being offered again, we jumped at the affordable price. We have just been reading your chat line and have not been able to see any comments on this hotel since it has changed hands. Will Canadians be comfortable, or is it now geared for Mexican tourists only; what happened to the vernicular railway to the different room levels; how is the food etc.? Can you please send me an e-mail answer, or place our queries on your chat line? A recent heavy snowfall has us longing for the beautiful sun and sand. Thanks for your help. Dear Tom. We are returning to the Gala Resort for the second time in two years this February. Last year we had a tourist agent make the arrangements and these included transportation between the airport and hotel and return trip. This year we have made the arrangements with the Gala Resorts reservations. I have been told that they do not provide any transportation between airport and hotel and that we should take a taxi. I have just read in the current "Comments" page, two visitors quoting taxi rates that are really different in price. I believe that you called the taxi drivers "taxi bandidos". Last year we took cabs into the towns and even to snorkeling beaches and thought they were all very fair in their pricing. Has something changed in a year? Bottom line -- What is the best way to get from the airport to the Gala Resort and back if you are not with a tour group? Thanks for listening, and I love your web page. Adriana surfnmap@aol.com December 31, 2000
Adriana, I thought the Gala provided airport transportation for all their guests. If not, it won't be much of a problem. Taxis from the airport cost about three times as much as they do anywhere else (such as for the return trip to the airport). Hence, "the taxi bandidos". But the Gala isn't far away so it won't be too bad even at three times the honest rate. Tom
Hi Tom, Great web site!!! Thanks. My group of 6 will be arriving in Huatulco on Jan.6, 2001 provided Mexicana stays on track. This will be our first visit. Is it possible to arrange to have someone meet us at the airport and transport us to the Club Med? The transfer from the airport is not included in our package and I would like to make this arrangement in advance of our arrival. Also, I would love to arrange to charter a sail boat with crew that would take us around the coastal area. We are a group of adults with sailing background and would not enjoy the so called "Booze Cruise" type experience. Lastly, I will be traveling with only a certified copy of my birth certificate/drivers license/credit cards as I do not have time this week to get a passport. What is the best way for me to handle the extra money I will be needing? It seems that the banks require a passport to cash any travelers checks, or I have to take a bath on the conversion to cash them at the hotel? I would also like to possibly hire a guide for a day, any suggestions? Thanking you in advance, Kristel
If the Club Med does not send someone, the "taxi bandidos" will be eagerly waiting to serve you. No need to make arrangements. Jack Hennessy (9)587-0945, or at the Hotel Posada Chahue, Email: velerolunaazul@hotmail.com, can take you sailing on the Luna Azul. Recommended. Your birth certificate will need to have a raised seal on it, otherwise it's no good. Drivers license and credit won't assert your citizenship. ATM card is the best way to handle money by far. Hotel may charge 15% to convert cash, possibly more for travelers checks. Club Med can help you with guides. Tom
What a tremendous site - special thanks for your time and effort in sharing this wealth of information. After reading all the great comments about Hualtulco we have decided to make that our vacation destination. We plan on traveling the last week of February so we hope to finalize our plans this week. We will be traveling with our 2 year old-very active daughter and are leaning towards booking at the Gala Resort but would like to know how the Gala and Club Med compare. Do you know if both resorts have activities for 2 year olds or do they only offer them for older children. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!
Dear LeAnne: I've always felt that it takes a very special type of clientelle to consistentlt choose Club Med over other facilities. While no one does activities better, activities for two year olds will be few and far between at any resort. And like 'most all Club Meds, you will find yourself in a smallish room with no phone and no TV when the activities are over. Some find this to be charming and a positive situation. I'd choose the Gala. For a child as young as yours, you will probably want to secure individual child-care. Enjoy! John
Adriana- Just to add a little info: the taxi drivers who are granted the use of "sitio;Aeropuerto" pay royally for the privelege. The mark-up has to cover fees and graft. If you travel lightly, it's a short walk to Highway 200 where you can catch a cheaper cab or a bus... John
My wife and I just came back from a stay at the Barcelo for a week. Since it was our first time to Huatulco, we were interested in some other properties for a return trip and took a tour of the Magnihotel. Firstly, the vernicular stairway still operates. The one thing that we noticed was how few people there was at the hotel. This could be a good (or bad) sign. Most did appear to be Mexican. We enquired as to the rates and were quoted $3050 CND for one week, no airfair. May I ask what package you are getting from toronto?
My wife and I Just spent Christmas in Huatulco for the first time and enjoyed the people, climate, exploring, fishing, sailing etc. HOWEVER, the stay at the Barcelo was very dissapointing. We booked through Signature Holidays and they indicate that this is a Five star Hotel. NO WAY! We've been to all types of 'star' hotels throughout Mexico and I would rate this a 3 - 3.5 at the most. We were quit suprised since this was a Sheraton in 1998. A few of the problems were as follows. Our room was very old and musty smelling, sagging bed, rusted out toilets and sinks. This room hasn't been remodelled since the Hotel was built. There were not enough loungers by the pool or beach areas and in order to get a seat, you had to be up by 6:15-6:45AM to 'reserve' your spot. As far as the watersports goes, forget it! No snorkelling equipment was ever available, however the one time I did find some it was for a child. The hobie cats belonged to the Gala and the Jet skiis were 'booked' by Gala guests all the time. The windsurfer was broken. There were three sailboats to share with the other 300+ rooms in the Hotel. The fine dining restaurant had such slow service that after 1 1/2 hours of waiting for the main course to arrive we simply walked out. I will definitely be back to Huatulco. IT'S LOVELY! but think twice about the Barcelo.
Andre, Very interesting comments on the Barcelo. I spent a week at the former Royal Meava. At that time the hotel next door was not the present Barcelo. Did walk over and check it out, back 4 years ago, it lacked. I did a lot of checking before I went on this board. Tom was very helpful to me. My wife and I spent 7 nights at the New Barcelo Maya Garden Hotel just south of Playa Del Carmen(1 hour south of Cancun) and were very impressed. If you would care to see the Barcelo there, log on to my web site and check the photos as well as the full info and photos of the stay at the former Royal Meava. Thanks for the comments. I received an email from a future traveler to Barcelo Huatulco. I will forward this URL for him to read. Here is the URL for my web site. If you would perhaps copy your comments from here and paste them into the discussion board on my site, I think this would help some folks who come to my Huatulco page and send me questions. Thanks- Texas Pepper http://home.earthlink.net/~pepper77
Hello Andre, We are using Regent Holidays, and got a pretty good deal through our local travel agent. Magnihotel was listed last Saturday under the Regent ad in the Toronto Star for an even better deal though - $999 for one week, all inclusive. It is still listed as a 4 star hotel, so we will hope for the best.
Husband and I are traveling with friends to Huatalco, staying at the Gala, arriving the end of January for 11 days. We are a group of 20 and looking for what might be within walking distance of the Gala. When the guys are golfing, the girls would like to venture out for a look around. If anyone has any Do's & Don'ts for us, that would be great. Has anyone gone on the cruise of the bays, how was it? Should that be something not to miss? Is there any shopping close by? How is the golf course? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Holly and Ken Milburn Crete, Illinois
Hi Holly. Hi Kent. My name is Carlos Ramos and I'm SCUBA instructor at the dive shop inside the Barcelo. There's not really much to see around the Gala. In front of the Barcelo, you'll find a gifts store named HUATULKOPKA wher you can find clothes, t-shirts, inflatables, pottery, handcrafts, watches, silver, coca colas and gatorades, bottled watter, bags and many otther different things. On the same building, you'll find the JARRO CAFE, a nice restaurant which name in spanish sound like "hard rock cafe", where you may go to eat if you want to change your diet at the Gala. And next to it there is a mini market named SUN SUN, ti buy candies, some drugs, wine, sun tan lotions and all the things that this stores sell. A little bit more away there are a couple of clothes stores, some restaurants (La Pampa Argentina, Argentina Grill, Don Porfirio, Noches Oaxaqueñas). Shooping oportunities are more varied on the downtown LA CRUCESITA (there are many small stores) and in the SANTA CRUZ HANDCRAFT MARKET. Both places are 10 minutes taxi ride away fron the Gala. About the golf course, I don't play it ( it's to complicated to hit that tinny ball with the stick and the last time I tried I almost kill a caddy that was watching me 200 yards away, but not with the ball but with the stick that went out of my hands !)I but I know the course and it is beautiful. The hole nuumber 13 is next to tthe beach (20 stteps away). I've heard lots of golfers saying that is a very nice golf course. The bays tour is highly recomended. The landscape is very beautiful. You can go in a big boat with otther 30 or 40 passengers in a fixed trip (I mean the boat operator will decide where to stop, where to swim, where to eat) or if you prefer more freedom, you can get a couple of "pangas" (speed boats 27 ft. long) which can ttake up to ten passengers each, and you'll decide where and how long you want to sttop on each place. I reccomend one stop in LA ENTREGA for snorkeling as well as the island of Cacaluuta (the side that faces the coast). Riscalillo is good for snorkeling and la INDIA BEACH is incredible to be spend some time in the sun. If you need more specific information, just write back. I'll be glad to assist you with first hand information and tips.
I stayed at the Gala in February 1999 and decided to walk along the highway to see what there was around us..... Carlos gave you a perfect description.... Nothing much other than a few little shops. I recommend shopping in La Crussecita (sp?). Santa Cruz was OK, but La Crussecita was better. Enjoy yourself! It's a beautiful resort and I would go back in a heartbeat... This year we are going to Karmina Palace in Manzanillo..... any comments would be appreciated.... Taleen
I must concur with the others. The "micro" (small bus) can take you to either Santa Cruz or to La Crucecita for next to nothing. Taxis are cheap and right outside the hotel door. Do NOT miss the bay cruise. Take one day to taxi up to Santa Maria Huatulco and see what the area was like before the resorts. Charlie mentioned El Jarro Cafe - stop in for a smoothie or something even if you don't eat. Raffa and Suzanne have the greatest parrot in the world! As for the golf course - you'll like it and come back agreeing that it is the most under-used golf course in existence. John
LeAnn- Just a quick addendum after thinking over your letter. A young child is destined to suffer ear equalization problems on the flight. Intense tropical sun will require constant attention and lots of sunscreen. At age 2, the baby will hardly have the ability to appreciate paradise. And the romantic beauty of this tropical paradise will have your minds on things other than child care. Is there a set of grandparents available to spoil her while you're gone?
The Luna Azul sailboat tours are great. There is an afternoon one and an evening one. The afternoon one, when we took it, included lunch, drinks, and a stopover at a beach where you could swim and snorkel (equipment provided at no cost). We also took the sunset tour and saw dolphins, turtles and manta rays. Jack usually has a fishing pole out the back of the boat and on the evening tour it was fun to watch them real in a few fish. Jack is originally from Vancouver Canada so no language barrier if you dont have a grasp on spanish like myself. If you have a large enough gang i think you could charter the boat and get the tour customized to your preference. There are even private beaches (meaning no resorts or restaurants) that are fun to explore that Jack goes to. His homepage is lunaazul.netfirms.com. Enjoy yourselves. Huatulco is beautiful.
will be traveling to the barcelo hotel at the end of febuary . has any one been to this resort lately, i would like to hear some comments .
John Wiliams (Hi John, nice to read your suggestions again; I wish the best for the new year) mentioned the Parrot at the Jarro Cafe. Its name was PACO, and it was a side atraction of Huatulco. Unfortunately, two months ago PACO felt the "recall of the wild" and he flew away. Rafa, Susi and Mariana (the three years old daughther of them) got really sad, as well as a lot of people. PACO used to be very funny. Saludos de su amigo. Charlie. Carlos C. Ramos M. PADI IDCS 157092 ACTION SPORTS MARINA BARCELO HUATULCO BEACH RESORT
Hi Guys. Thanks for contacting me. I can explain you some facts about Andre´s comments, but not all them because I don't have access to the rooms or the restaurants (they are expensive for a SCUBA instructor budget). I don't know nothing about how old the beds are or if the service is slow. Huatulco is most of the year empty, I mean, just a few tourist come along the year. Most of the business (including hotels) have a reduced staff (there's no way to pay a huge staff during the 7 months of low season). So, specially the last two weeks of the year, the ammount of people coming to visit Huatulco exceeds by far the capacity of hotels, restaurants and many other business. You should be asking yourself: why don't they hire more people to work ? and the question is very simple, because there is not qualified (I mean, professional waiters, hostess, bar tenders, and so) to work, because they need to work on the low season and they move to other parts of Mexico (as Acapulco or Cancun) Believe me, the Christmas week is crazy. On my experience, I'd been working from 6.00 am to 8:00 pm everyday, with out a chance to have lunch during the past two weeks. About the water activities: André is right about the snorkeling gear. At the beginning of the season, we had 30 sets of snorkeling gear. The hotel offered them on the all inclusive plan, so the guests come for their sets, sign for them, and they didn't bring them back until the afternoon or the next day. After four days, 15 masks were useless; I don't know what the people do with them ! Probably they use them to dig holes on the sand or something like this. By the end of the week, only 9 sets were in conditions to be used. And that's the same history with fins. Wave runners were rented by Gala, Quinta Real and Barcelo guests the same. There are four wave runners and they didn't stop all day long. To avoid troubles, they can´to be reserved so the first showing is the first taking. They are not reserved because, it use to happen, that somebody booked the wave runner for 10 AM and he showed by 10:30. As you may guess, the wave runner can´t be waiting for the person who reserved if he shows 30 minutes later, while there are another 10 persons waiting for it. So, when the guest that reserved the wave runner finally shows, obviously it is not available and the trouble arises. That's the reason why they are not subject to reservations. And the same is with sailboats (there are not hobby cats on the all inclusive package), and kayaks. So, André came on the busiest and most crowded week of the year. I'm sure by February you'll find a most quiet and relaxed Huatulco. The occupation level is going to be much lower and that can be a big difference. Hopefully, this email answers to some of your doubts. If you want more specific info, just let me know it. See you in February. Tu amigo. Charlie. Carlos C. Ramos PADI IDCS 157092
From: M. Laurin To: charlie_diver@hotmail.com Sent: Wednesday, January 03, 2001 6:24 PM Subject: Barcelo Buenos Dias Carlos. Como estas? Estamos muy bien. Vamos a verle en Febrero. We read Andre's post. Did you happen to see it? We're wondering if things are as bad at the Barcelo as Andre says they are. We were looking forward to a relaxing week and beach and hobie cats, etc. and snorkelling. Having firsthand knowledge, maybe you can share something with us. Somos canadienses. Hace mucho frio aqui. Mucha nieve aqui. Esperamos nuestro viaje hasta Mexico muchisimo. Gracias para todo. Hasta la vista. Rick Allen & Cecile Lavas Mike & Marlene Laurin
Hey Carlos, I'm sure you remember talking to me about the problems at the Barcelo and although you have an interest in not degrading the property as such, you must admit that there are some problems that need attention. And yes, I did come at the busiest time of the year, but, I also paid twice as much to be there at Christmas than any other time. As someone who leases space from the resort to conduct your business, I would think that you should be pressuring the hotel to give you good, and safe, equipment to work with. You yourself did say that you've been working 14 hours a day, so get some help! I did not mean to make it sound as though the Barcelo a poor choice as a resort. I just want people to know, that I (and my wife) have been to many "star" hotels in Mexico and know the difference between 3 and 5 stars, and the Barcelo does not offer 5 star service. Tom, you have a great website and thanks for the opportunity for all of us to converse in this way. Andre, Vancouver, Canada
I am a female runner and interested in knowing if there is a safe 5-15k route close to club med in Huatulco. I will be running on my own, so safety is of the utmost importance. Thanks, Kathy
Dear Kathy - Except for certain corners of Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Zipolite after dark, you are probably far safer in Mexico than you would be in any major US city. That said, I would suggest you keep your solitary roaming to daylight hours and watch those around you before you run on isolated beaches. That said, you might try running to Santa Cruz - stopping at the bandstand in the Zocalo for a quick fruit juice before heading back to the Med. Or you may try running in the oposite direction, going past the luxury resorts and up to the Balconies de Tangolunda, where the really nice condos are. Avert your eyes as you pass the Gala - you might otherwise figure that you chose the wrong all-inclusive! Variations might involve the cart paths at the golf course or even a run into La Crucecita. Be advised that the terrain is anything but flat and level. Should you run yourself ragged in the tropical heat, just flag down a taxi. Once you've aclimated, find a fellow endorprine junkie to keep you company and run past Santa Cruz to Bahia El Organo or Bahia El Maguay. Both are doable for a serious runner. John
Hello Holly: just read your question. My fiance and I stayed next door to the Gala at the Zaashila 12-7-00 to 12-14-00. From the gala, it is only maybe a 3/8 of a mile walk to some small shops and Jarro Cafe without the parrot. You will absolutley love Huatulco, the weather, the people, just everything is wonderful. You can taxi to Santa Cruz, about 1-1/2 mile from the Gale for 20 pesos or La Crucecita about 2 miles for about 30 pesos. La Crucecita is a little bigger. It is a small town with a nice public square surrounded by small shops and restraunts. While we we there, we were fortunate enough to meet a wonderful man by the name of Mario Cobos, he speaks fluent English, not alot of people do, as well as Spanish. A nicer man youcould not possilby meet. Mario can and did arrage a bays tour, for four of us, in a small boat, about 18-20 ft. It was small and private, not huge with many people. If you would like, I have Mario's phone number if you need anything or have any questions, he can help once you are there. He is the most sincere and one of the nicewst people I have ever met. We are planning on going back next Nov. hopefully for 10 days this time. Have a great time, you can't help it. Again if you have any questions or need Marios number, you can reach me at Lamarlafong@webtv.net. Jeff
Hi : just read your letter on the web page. My fiance and I just returd to the snow and cold from Huatulco after a week there in mid Dec. While we were there we met a couple on their honeymoon and became freinds. We also had the good fortune of meeting a wonderful man by the name of Mario Cobos. He speaks fluent English and Spanish. A nicer, warmer man you could not possibley meet. The four of us went on a bays tour to secluded beaches for swimming and snorkeling. We also rented a jeep and Mario drove to the mountains for a coffee plantation tour and a swim in mountain streams, jumping of vines into clear pools of mountain strea water, what a great day. Do yourself a favor and contact me for Marios phone number, he is an absolute gem. We are hoping to go back in Nov. for 10days, I can't wait. Have fun. Jeff
My wife and me will go to Barcelo at the end of January for two weeks. We suspect thes conditions of this hotel after we read your comment. But when we read our brochure of Air Transat we can see that hotel has four stars not five... for the present year. Please give to us others comments: how many times was difficult to go to the fine principal restaurant... always, on many days, on the morning only and other times on a day... and to get some meat in others restaurants in this hotel on a day, It's the same problem or not... or we can get meat any time in theses others. The meat was good or not? Have you demand to change for a superior room after somes days, if yours isn't good? Without reservation for the chairs in the morning, it's difficult on the day after nine near the pool or on the beach? Thanks you for your comments.
Thank you for posting this information. My wife and I have just booked a trip to Huatulco at the Barcelo. I took the liberty of copy some of Andre's comments and sent a question to Signature about this. I hope to have a response before we leave on the 3rd week in Jan. We have never been to Huatulco and look forward to exploring the beaches, snorkling, and walking. Anyone have information on what to take for mosquito repellent? Thanks for the help.
Hello, I was just reading your email and was wondering if you would email us with Mario's information. We are going with our friends to Gala Resort Jan.16th. I wa wondering if you had any other comments on Huatalco (fun things to do) or aboout the Gala Resort. We would love to hear from you......
Hi, saw your letter. I live in Cleveland, Ohio and just got back from Huatulco in mid Dec. We rented a beautiful condo from a man by the name of Phil Minch located at the Zaashila Comino Real just up the street from the Magnihotel and next door to the Gala. We payed US dollars 100.00 per day to the owner, and the hotel charges 200 pesos per day for cleaning and water(bottled). We had a big bedroom, a king bed with a beuatiful view of the ocean. It had a kitchen, dining area, a living room, a really nice place to stay at a very reasonable price. The Zaashila is beautiful. It was the beast vacation we have gone on. You can find Phil Minch's condo on this website. If you do rent, mention my name, I get a free days stay. We want to go back for 10 days in november. Ask for suite #133. Beutiful view. Great deal. Thanks and have fun if and when you go again. Jeff
Nice to see that someone else is questioning Signature Holidays about the Barcelo, interesting to note that Air Transat has now listed it as a 4 Star Hotel. I sent a fax to Signature a couple of days ago with no response......About mosquito repelent? We never saw any or got bitten by any, so never thought about it. Is it common to get these mosquito bites? Andre, Vancouver, BC
Hi Tom, Definitely like your website! It was instrumental in getting 4 of us to visit Huatulco for the first time starting Jan 12. We will will be staying at the Castillo Hotel. I would like to hear any comments or suggestions on the hotel and area. I should point out that we prefer Mexican style hotels. As long as it is clean and friendly with good Mexican food we will be happy. Looking forward to our visit. Cory & Vivian
Hi Kathy. John have told almost everything. There are many local female runners on the roads of Huatulco every day as well as tourists (I can't understand why the people comes here during vacation time and get out of the bed early in the morning to run, sweat and get tired). Huatulco is safe, very safe, but don't be over confident. Avoid isolated beaches (just in case). A good path to follow is Club Med, Zaashila and back. This total 5 to six kilometers. The way out from CLUB MED is up hill (with a pendient of 15 deegres at least, from club med to the Quinta Real is down hill, from here to Gala is flat and from Gala to Zaashila is up hill again.
We will be spending a week at Magnihotel (formerly Crown Pacific) in February. We will he travelling with 2 kids (age 10 & 12). Any info about this place would be a great help. We are returning to Huatulco for a second time, since we loved it so much the first time. Tom your web-site about Huatulco and Puerto Escondido are wonderful. I feel think I'm there already. Keep up the good work. Are there any artists of museums in the area or with touring distance? One more question and then I'll stop. Is it possible to go by boat to Puerto Escondido? How long would this take and how what is the cost? Thanks, Sarah
Hi: We stayed at this hotel for one night, 2 years ago, so I don't know how much it has changed since then. If you want Mexican style, this is a good place. The staff was very friendly and helpful. It doesn't have all of the amenities as the big resorts, but it has a swimming pool that is lit up at night. The food from its restaurant is very good.It is within walking distance to the beach. We were travelling with two kids, so we felt the security wasn't the greatest. We had only a single latch on the balcony doors, which looked onto the streets. The streets were quite busy and noisy at night. I felt what they lacked in services, they made up for with their ever-helpful staff.
Great! we leave on the 15th to the Barcelo and now I read this. We had concidered the Gala but the Barcelo was recommended to us. I even emailed you Tom and asked what hotel was best between the Gala and Barcelo. You answered simply "The Barcelo is best" How can this be? I have not heard one bad comment on the Gala. I think the Sheraton chain saw this hotel as not being up to thier chains standards anymore and dumped it. The new owners are using the fact that it is a great hotel because it used to be a Sheraton. What's this about the rooms? (Our room was very old and musty smelling, sagging bed, rusted out toilets and sinks) The staff may be busy in the holiday season but that's no excuss for such rooms. I don't care about the water activities, they are never that great wherever you go. When a resort is rated at a 4 star, you don't hear about these things! (Perhaps thier ratings are done out of 10 now) It seems no matter how much money you pay, or how much research you do on a resort, they (travel companys) always seem to bullshit you. I also sent Andre's comments to Signature asking for thier comments, and that they post them on this board. Signatures "Ask the Experts" site:http://www.signaturevacations.com/talk/traveltalk.html If what is said about the resort is untrue, we should hear from them.
Hola! I thought I would include my comments since this topic is getting pretty hot. I use to work for Signature Vacation and I was a representative on site in Huartulco (4-5 years ago). I imgine that things might of change slightly but I don't think that much, I stayed myself at the Gala resort but also handled the Sheraton and the Castillo hotel at the time. They all have changed names since, but I'm keeping up to date with everything since I love the area so much. My input is the following: The Gala is definetely the best hotel to stay at in Huatulco. No questions about that, the quality of the service is excellent, entertainment is great and the staff is also very friendly. I would rate the Gala a 6 star. Sheraton is a 4 star. It is a nice hotel and yes the rooms are a little bit smelly from the humidity. They do have to make some improvement on the rooms, I don't believe they are runned down, but they need to have a face lift! It sounds like they need to invest a little bit of money to keep up with the competition next door! As far as beach chairs goes, it has been a problem forever, but this is also a problem everywhere you go. People "reserve" their chairs with towels early in the morning, I would always suggest to take away the towels and sit there anyways. This is out of the hotels control. Dave, my suggestion to you is maybe ask Signature if they can change your reservation to the Gala instead. Signature has a very good working relationship with Gala and they are very flexible to accomodate their guests. The "Sheraton" remains a good hotel, it is not the best but I don't think you will have a horrible holiday! Eventhough it might need a face lift in the rooms, I trully believe that it is clean and the food is good. Huatulco is a very nice area and they're is alot of activities and beautiful beaches to visit outside the hotel zone. If I can be of futher assistance, please do not hesitate to ask me. Christine
Dear Sarah - It would be possible to hire a boat to take you nearly anywhere. In fact, an Austrian friend of mine boats from his home in Puerto Escondido to Puerto Angel and to Huatulco on his spearfishing jaunts with some frequency. However, he tends not to make it a day trip since it would take much of a day to do it. There are no scheduled ferries or anything of that nature. I doubt it would be cheap. Take the bus instead. As for museums...in a way, a trip up to Santa Maria Huatulco is almost like a trip to a living museum. Certainly it can be like a trip back in time. The Bahias Huatulco complex (Santa Cruz, La Crucecita, Tangolunda) is a bit too new an area to give the real Oaxacan feeling, but Santa Maria will take you there. Artisits, folk art(artesanias), and the like is abundant. Check out the silver shops. Elsewhere in the website, Tom talks about a German friend of ours near Chacalapa who does some incredible scrimshaw on sharks' teeth. Rent a car from Luis at Los Portales and spend a day or two in the mountains above Pochutla. I think you'll find all you are looking for and more. John
Hi! I have been eading the comments now for several days and I'm wondering what is the best resort to stay at over Xmas with a teenager and 2 parents that want to relax and enjoy good food. Would the Gala be the resort of choice? A few years ago we stayed at the Club Maeva in Manzanillo and really enjoyed the resort though the food could use improvement but the resort was only rated 3 star. The nightly entertainment was good and not overdone and the children really enjoyed meeting other children and the various activites available to them. Would the Gala be comparable? Last year we were in Playa del Carmen area and went to see the Gala in that area and it appeared very similar to the Maeva in Manzanillo woyuld the same be true here? Any info you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks Katy G PS. Here in Toronto we are in the midst of another snowy blizzard and I turned to this site as an escape. It will take all year to save for this vacation but already I can't wait!!
re: GALA ROYAL HUATULCO MEXICO Being from New York, the winters are gloomy and cold . We have traveled all over the Carabbean and Mexico. We have found a home for the greatest vacation under the sun. Jan. 2001 will be the 8th year straight that we are returning to the GALA ROYAL RESORT. (formerly Royal Maeva) We have NEVER had a cloudy or rainy day. The weather here is picture perfect. The hospitality at the Gala Royal Hotel is the best that can be. They have earned their 5 STARS. Nothing is to much to ask for and always accomplished with a smile. The food is wonderful and non stop. The variety so large it suits everyones taste. The rooms are kept immaculate at all times. The staff is always trying very hard to fill all ones needs. WE LOVE THIS PLACE. Steven and Wendy Kroll Bellmore NY
If you go to Club Med be prepared to to a lot of walking - especially if your room is not located near the pool or Beach. My husband and I were at the Gala last spring, with friends staying at Club Med. They kept mentioning the price of drinks (they are not included at Club Med, unless it was meal time), while we sipped on a variety of fresh drinks from 11:00 am untill 2:00 in the morinng, at the Gala. (Drinks are included at the Gala) I saw many people with Kids, and we are returning to the Gala with ours this March. There is a great shade pool that you and your two year old can splash around in , and I saw many babies taking naps in thier Strollers along side Mom and Dad. Common Sense in the sun, and your child will be fine. I would suggest going to a Health Food Store to find a high SPF for your little one, plus keep them in a large brim hat at all times. For take off and landing have your child suck on a soother or a bottle to help with air pressure. P.S. I seem to remember that the kids club starts for kids at the age of two. Have your travel agent phone the hotel to confirm. L. Paterson
Greetings Huatulco Vacationers! I have been following this web page for the last couple of years and have found it to be very valuable. Thanks Tom! We travelled to Huatulco last February and stayed at the Barcelo. When we had booked our holiday it was though Signature Vacations and we had booked into the Sheraton. It was through this web page that we discovered the change in ownership from the Sheraton to the Barcelo and Signature never did notify us or our travel agent of the change. We soon discovered that the Signature package we had booked and what was being offered were a little different since the hotels had changed hands. Through out our stay at the Barcelo our Signature representative was very often not available but the other companies that were represented were very helpful. The home base for our rep was at the Gala which has quite tight security to the resort and did not allow you in to visit her with any questions. When we did call from our hotel to the Gala to get in touch with her regarding our package we were charged for the phone calls. We discovered this at the end of our stay when we were presented with a bill for our calls. To ensure that our package was complete we had to speak to the one of the new hotel managers. She was very nice and helpful and corrected any problems or concerns we had. She also followed up that all was well and let us know that she was always available if we needed anything. Sorry but I don't remember her name. As for the hotel itself. Upon checking in we were put close to the laundry room and returned to the desk to ask for another room. They handed us four keys and were free to choose which ever room we wanted. I cannot say that any of the rooms were not satisfactory but they were all very clean and did not appear too 'run down'. We ended up chosing the room we did because of the view. Our room did not have a musty smell to it and the cleaning service to the room was always very good. The chairs around the pool were only a problem throughout part of the vacation when a conference was being held and the place was packed. For the most part there seemed to be chairs available thought out the course of the day. The only reason we were up early to 'save' our chairs was because we liked to sit in a certain area and we particularly liked the shade. There were also many people that liked this area. As for visiting Carlo at his 'office' my husband did have trouble on occaission getting his equipment for snorkeling but when he did check back at a later time there was always something available. Our biggest problem was through Signature and the changing of the package. They no longer included as this being available for its guests and the Barcelo corrected that for us. Regarding the food.... Breakfast was always very good. Lots of fresh juice, fruits, etc. They changed the buffet daily and the omlet bar was always open. Lunch was ordered off the menu and there was enough variety to keep everyone pretty happy. The pizza oven by the pool was great. The buffet dinners were OK. The Italian nite was the best and many people from other hotels came for this meal. Some meals were better than others and some were repetative for contents but I always seemed to have a bigger lunch and later in the day the it wasn't a problem for me. The Italian restaurent when we were there was very good and we did enjoy trying some different things. The service was fine and not too slow but the restaurant at the time was only partially full. We really enjoyed the piano player and we taught the waiters how to make Spanish Coffees. We had fun and so did the waiters. We could go to this restaurent as often as we wanted. The restaurent (where we had breakfast) only opened part way through our vacation for dinner and they had a nice variety of foods. I would order there and they very kindly brought it to the beachfront buffet area for me so that we could enjoy the evening sounds of the ocean. Unfortunately this restaurent was not used by alot of people and maybe they have closed it again. Hopefully not because it was nice treat from a buffet dinner. The musical entertainment on some nights was repetative and could have used a little boost. The disco was a small room and we found it to be mostly empty. It was not too big of a deal for us though, since we were so exhausted from the heat and activities at the end of the day that we were ready for bed. (We are in our thirtys) The lobby bar was always a quiet place to relax and the bartenders very helpful to make anything that you liked. They made mango everything for me and after the first night they always had mangos on hand. All the bartenders were always open for suggestions and didn't scrimp on the alcohol AT ALL. The entertainment around the pool area and beach volleyball were all good. They could have used some new music around the pool area. I would now bring some other music to give them just so there would be some variety. Overall, our time around the pool was very nice and peaceful. We both have very demanding jobs and enjoyed the peace and quiet that the Barcelo offered. There were also many guests that returned annually to this resort. They too had noticed the changes to the hotel but still enjoyed the very kind staff and the surroundings. We are returning to Huatulco this year but we are staying at the Gala. The ONLY reason we chose this resort is because my brother, sister in law and 3 and 5 year old children our joining us. We checked out the Gala's children area and that of the Barcelo's and decided that it would better suit the children's needs. The people that did use the childrens services at the Barcelo found it be satisfactory but their children were younger and didn't need all the extra activities. The park area at the Gala was also quite large and was very well protected from the sun. Since we have booked our vacation we have wondered if we made the right decision to move next door and I will only be able to tell you the differences when I return in February. All in all, Huatulco was a beautiful place to visit. We would hight recommend the Luna Azul sailing adventure for both the day and sunset cruises. They were both excellent and Jack was an excellent host. His boat is beautiful and my only question to him was 'What do you do for relaxation.' The shopping in Santa Cruz was nice and we really enjoyed the Cruccecita. I'm a shopaholic and both satisfied my needs when the urge struck. The internet cafe called Choco LATTE kept us connected with home through e-mail on a regualar and cheap basis. Also with regards to the Barcelo, the staff was excellent, very kind and if you asked for anything that was not available or that you wanted they tried to get it for you. All we had to do was ask. I can't comment to you on regards to the stars of the hotel because our first all-inclusive and we were not too disappointed. By the way this year we have booked with Air Transat. If you have any other questions drop a line. Happy Holidays!
Hello Katy, Club Maeva is Manzanillo use to be under the same owner until the past few years. I have worked at both Playa Del Carmen and Huatulco. From good references from employees, which worked at the three of them, I would be safe to say the the Manzanillo club would be the one which would be the less recommended. I personnaly prefered Huatulco to Playa Del Carmen mostly because of the atmosphere. The resort in playa is much bigger and more dispersed, it gives you the feeling of it being empty and no activities going on, but there is much to do. The guest's in Huatulco are also very different, you will find Canadians, Americans and Mexican's as Playa has many European guest's (Italian's, German's, Deutch, Americans and Canadians). It is a warmer and more enthousiastic crowd in Huatulco. You will find many activities for the children, not to worry. The food is good, it will probably be the same type where you have a different theme each night, you also have the choice of three A la carte restaurant, Italian is good! but make sure you are in line in the morning to reserve at the Public Relation desk. Hope this helps! Christine
Hello, We are going to the Gala Resort on Jan. 16th 2001 . We have been all over Mexico Cancun,Ixtapa,Cozumel,Playa de Carmen and Western Caribean cruise. We are trying Huatalco and hoping it is nice there.Wow you must really like it there, 8 times! Thanks for the info!!!!
Hi Holly What a fun group you sound like! We are going to stay at the Gala for one week starting on Jan. 16th. We have 7 people with us. Thought I would say "Hi" as we are from Dekalb, Illinois. I will write when we return. (before you go) Have fun!
Again, I must weigh in on Charlie's side. Charlie has the concesion. The Barcelo is NOT going to buy him a bunch of gear for the Christmas season. As any dive instructor will tell you, there is no more personal piece of equipment than a good mask. If the marine environment is a primary reason for your visit to the Oaxacan Pacific, please do yourself a huge favor and go buy yourself a good mask from a dive shop, where they know how to fit you, before you leave on your vacation. You will NEVER be happy with a rental mask. The skirts are stretched out by people pulling the straps too tight, trying to stop leaks on a mask that doesn't fit. Or they're used by people slathered with a sunscreen that attacks silicone rubber. It would be nice if Charlie (or any other of the dive shops in Huatulco) COULD hire some extra help during the oh-so-short high season. But no highly trained dive professional can affoard to work for only five months out of the year. God knows I'VE tried to live there doing what Charlie's doing - I couldn't make it. I'll have to be a wage slave in the states 'til I can pull off a retirement package that'll bring me a dollar income into the peso economy. But when that happens, look out Costa Esmeralda! Prospero AN~o nuevo, Carlos. And give my best to everybody. John
Thank you for all the info...nobody in our group has ever tried to scuba, can we get certified with you or do we need to do that before we arrive? What other things can we do at your water sports? Will wait to hear from you, Holly
Addendum: Full occupancy is only a week either side of Christmas and two weeks prior to Easter. Everybody gets to be "rich" for four weeks a year. Between these two short periods, the occupancy rate varies from 50 to 70 percent. Enough to make a living. The other seven months, occupancy at the major hotels rarely exceeds 30%. Level of service and location of room can be estimated by those parameters. John
Thank you very much for your site. It helps people making their mind on their vacation. We are going to the Gala in january 2001 and would like to know if there is any places where I could roller blade in the area of the hotel or would I have to go outside the hotel areas? I have been to a lot of places and normally it is not possible because of the way they build the places. I am wondering if the Gala is the same. I also would like to know what language do the kittengarden employees do speak ? because we speak french, english and a little bit of spanish but not our four year old? Would he be able to have someone to speak french to ? I don't expect so , but asking does not hurt anyone ? If someone went lately with a four year old and they have tips on what not to forget , please let me know. We are use to travel with him ( it is his fifth trip to mexico with us) , his is use to the planes and hotels and so and so. It always was very easy traveling with him. thank you in advance.
We are planning on a holiday to Huatulco on Jan. 26 for 1 week and are wondering if anyone knows where we can pick up some turtle oil. We were in Mazatlan years ago and found that was the best lotion for dry skin after being in the sun all day. I am not sure if it is okay to bring back into Canada but would like to use it while we are there. Also we are interested in checking out the ATV tour, any suggestions?? We will be staying at the Gala. What about mopeds or motorcycles? What about places to go dancing in the evenings? We will be travelling by ourselves and hope to meet other couples during our stay. Do we need to take a light sweater or jacket for the evenings or is it still warm and what temperatures will we expect to have that time of year? Anyother suggestions would be appreciated. We have never been to Huatulco before but do a fair bit of travelling.
Unfortunately, I'm sure you can still get endangered species products. I was once shocked to find that a dish I was eating on Zipolite contained turtle eggs. If you identify the product as turtle oil on your return to Canada, I can assure you that under enlightened Canadian laws it will be confiscated. Somewher outside the gates of the National Turtle Institute in Mazunte would probably be your best place to look if you feel you must. As for ATV tours, check with Charlie at the dive shop for recommended operators. The concierge at the hotel can also help, but Charlie will be your best source. He can also direct you to the ATV and motorsports rentals. Ya just gotta go to Bar La Crema to dance! That'll put you on the Zocalo in La Crucecita, where you will find other venues. There's also a really popular disco in Santa Cruz and another in Tangolunda. Just remember that the fun rarely starts before 10pm in Mexico and it keeps going longer than you do! Leave your sweater at home. John
Please do me a favor and e mail me when you return. I am bringing my husband and an 8 & 10 year old boy with us on Feb.8,2001. We are staying at the Barcelo along with a convention. This news is very unsettling as we were in Mazzatlan last year and had a horrible trip. We love Mexico and have been to Play del Carmen (10+) Cancun (8) Puerto Vallarta (10) and Mazzatlan which was our worst vacation ever. Food when you received it was very good. Most mornings you would order off the menu only to be told an hour later, No ala carte, buffet.Let me know how you found this hotel. I would like to be prepared. Caryn

I am going on Feb. 8 and return on the 18th. I will let you know. I am concerned about the postings. We are going with a group of 100 for a chapter meeting. Wish me luck.
'Turtle Oil' is banned under 'CITES'-"CONVENTION ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN ENDANGERED SPECIE OF WILD FAUNA AND FLORA". The product now sold as 'Turtle Oil' in Mexico will, under close scrutiny reveal itself to be 'Squalane Oil'. Very similar in smell and texture 'Squalane' is an old name for Shark. Not nearly as efficacious as the now banned and no longer manufactured Turtle Oil, Squalane Oil leaves skin ,at least my skin, blotchy and reddish-not recommended. As mentioned Turtle Eggs are still available on the Black Market wherever there are people thre are those who will try to destroy the natural world for $$$$$$, this is nothing new unfortunately.
We are off to Huatulco Feb 1, 2001 for our first visit. In researching our holiday we note that so many of the e-mails reflect the same types of responses and admiration of this destination as those of our favorite - Ixtapa. I have been checking the weather for the last 10 days or so and have noted that most of the reports from both resorts are forecasting partly cloudy to cloudy (and even some rain!) - none of which we have ever seen in Ixtapa. If anyone has recently returned from Huatulco, please let us know what the weather was like on your visit. Thanks, Greg.
Since you are stayng at the Gala you are already at the most happening spot as far as dancing, the Gala has a very good reputation as far as the Disco. It is usually very good, the DJ's are great, the only thing to worry about is the type of guests you will have that week, but trust me I always had a great time. La crema is an excellent suggestion as well, please say hola to Edouardo (bar owner) and Magic Circus is Santa Cruz has excellent latino pop music and other. You will find many local people at this bar. Good ambiance! Have fun doing the mambo! Christine
Dear Greg- While nothing is impossible, a rainy day this time of year in Huatulco would be most improbable. This is the dry season and rain is EXTREMELY rare from mid-October until mid-May. The trees in the rain forest secret a grey, waxy substance to maintain their hoard of moisture. The remaining green in the trees tends to come from the profusion of Bromeliads. Many trees do flower this time of year, though, and a lot of fruit is turning ripe. I wouldn't worry about being confined to your room due to rain storms, though. Even during the rainy months of late August, September, and into early October, the rains come and go quickly leaving far more sun cover than cloud cover. John
We have been going to Puerto Escondido in February for 10 years, and it rained one evening for about half an hour. Rest assure, it will be almost unbearably hot in the early afternoon, cooling late in the evening. I'm leaving Canada to go there on Jan. 26. This is one area of the world where the weather is very predictable.
I believe we will be travelling either Xmas week or just after (New Year's) how busy is it and how crazy will service be? We are seriously considering the Gala Resort and would like to take advantage of all the facilities especially with a teenager in tow, but would we be able to get access to things or would it just be too busy? Coments please! The only other time of year we could possibly travel would be the March break (middle week of March) since this would not require an absence from school. Any thought on whether this week would suit our need more or no real difference. Thanks Katy
During the week before Christmas and the week after Christmas, the hotel occupancy rate is at or near 100%. This is also the case for the two weeks prior to Easter. Between these periods, occupancy tends towards the 70th percentile. Between Easter and Christmas, the hotels are lucky to hit 30% occupancy with any consistency. It would be impossible to keep year 'round staffing at the levels needed during the four peak weeks and there isn't enough trained labor to fill the gaps. Speed of service, which is always somewhat dismaying to gringos, suffers even further. If you don't like your room, you're less likely to get a suitable alternative - the alternative is full, too. EVERYTHING is pressed into service during those periods. You will have a good time. It is still one of the most beautiful places on earth. But don't expect the service levels during those two two-week periods to be at the elavated level of the rest of the year. By the way, this is true throughout Mexico. And the Caribbean. And anywhere else large numbers gather for brief periods. (See Ft Lauderdale and South Padre during Spring Break or New Orleans during Mardi Gras.) I think Spring Break would be better if it's not during Holy Week. John
Further to all the recent discussion about the Barcelo, has anyone else been to this resort recently. We have a group of 8 booked the week of February 12 and are a little apprehensive after reading some of the recent comments. Any assistance/guidance would be greatly appreciated. Rick/Ont
My husband and I will be going the same week through a company incentive trip. I also would appreciate any comments regarding the resort. Thanks
Hi. There is a common sentence we use here in Mexico that says: "one talk about the party depending how did one was on it ". We try to mean with this, that, the same place, under the same conditions, can be very pleasant for some, and disturbing for some others. I think you'll have a great hollidays in the Barcelo. If you come searching or looking for defects, believe me , you'll find them on the Barcelo as in any other resort on the world. I worked in 1995 on the front desk of the OMNI Zaashila Resort (now is operated by Camino Real) for five montths during afternoons. The property is probably the most beautiful of Huatulco, the rooms were plenty of details, the rates were very expensive, and the quality of the service met the OMNI standards, and with all these characteristics, some people left the hotel blamming against it. So, just come, enjoy your vacations, enjoy the beauty of Huatulco and come by the water sports shack to say hello. Yours. Carlos "Charlie" Ramos
Hi There. So, as you can see, you are being couched by two old and sesoned "Huatulqueers". Hi John. Hi Christine. I don't have nothing else to add. Justt another option to dance is EL DEXQUITE loctated on Santa Cruz bay, right in front of the ocean. This place is very nice because is an open disco, set up under a "palapa" (a palm tree roof) next to the beach (you can get your drink and take it on the beach, watching the ocean and the anchored boats on the bay). And if you get so hot, just take a plunge on the ocean and come back to the disco. And finally, about "turtle oil", probably you won't know that turtles (there are eight species in the world) are endangered and/or in risk of extinction. Purchasing products made with parts of this animals, won't help them to survive as specie and encourage the people who still use them to make money, to continue killing them. Turtle oil is extracted heating the shell of the animal with water. The shell converts almost completely in oil, the water vaporizes and finally, a smooth oil is obtained. So, why don´t you look for another product, more "nature friendly", and hel p us to protect the turtles ?. I recomend you to visit the MUSEO DE LA TORTUGA in Mazunte. You'll learn a lot about turtles, you'll see them from the moment they live inside a soft and fragile egg, passing for all tthe stages of their growth. The museum is only 1 hour away from Huatulco. And if you have time, come by the place I work (water sports into Barcelo) and I'll show you some pictures of turtles taken underwater, including an underwater photograph I took in 1997, in which a turtle is being eated by a huge killer whale. If I can help you in any other way or if you need information about any other topic, just let me know it. Su amigo. Carlos "Charlie" Ramos.
Hi Holly. You don't need experience. That's my job, to teach you to SCUBA dive and beginners and unexperienced are the speciality of the house. I personally teach the courses and programs (only certified instructors must teach to dive, even for the introductory programs. Our dive center is located INTO the BARCELO, next door to Gala's water sports center. You can visit our section on the Tom's website going to www.tomzap.com/action.html I'll send you and email directly to your email addres with all the details about the experience programs and the certification courses. I'm sure you'll find SCUBA diving more interesting than visiting shops. Keep in touch. Tu amigo. Carlos "Charlie" Ramos
My husband and I are booked into the Barcelo for one week beginning January 29th. I'll provide you with details upon my return!
Anyone know a travel agent that might be able to get my family of 6 in at the Gala the week of March 22-April 2 from Chicago? We running into nothing but "all-booked" replys from the agents here. Any recommendations would be sincerely appreciated. thanks. kristin
THANX Melody that info would be appreciated. However by then we would not be able to make changes. I think our group is going to go to the Barcelo and take advantage of the weather and beach. It is -20 C here today. I think we will be able to get over some inconveniences. As long as they do not run out of Cervasa,Rum,and Tequila.
kRISTIN: I stayed at the Zaashila in mid December at a private condo, the Zaashila is right next door to the Gala. While the Gala is all inclusive, the condo has a king bed, 2 bathrooms, a full kitchen and a dining area, and would be big enough to accomodate a family ofsix. There are two fold out couches in the living room. The condo is twice as big as a normal hotel room. We rented it from a man named Phil Minch his e-mail is as follows philminchsr@hotmail.com my rate was $700 per week and I think it is now $1000. The Zaashila is a wonderful place, with a beautiful 100 yard pool and cordoned off hug sandy beach. If you heart is set on the Gala then Iguess that is it, but a condo at the Zaashila is a great option. Mention my name if you decide to go tht route. Jeff Liptak
My husband and I are going to be in at the Barcelo for 10 days starting January 27th - booked through Apple Vacations. We became concerned as well and asked out travel agent to check with Apple. They have clients complete satisfaction surveys after every trip and will flag concerns. They said that they have had no complaints about the Barcelo and suggested, as Carlos stated, that what bothers some, does not bother others. They suggested that if we did in fact get a room that was not up to our standards that we return to the front desk and tell them that it is unacceptable and asked to be moved. They also said to contact our Apple representative immediately to have them intervene. We too have decided that we'll just go with the flow (of rum and tequila
We booked with Signature and will be there on the 19th of Jan. at the Barcelo. Upon finding this web site full of information about Huatulco (thank you very much Tom - great information!) I sent a note to Signature asking about any issues with the Barcelo. This is the response I got today: Dear Dave; Thank you for your email. Barcelo hotels is considered a well respected hotel chain with high standards. Our customer relations department has not received any complaints or concerns about the hotel from our people in the destination, or from passengers. I will forward your email to the appropriate people to be aware that a situation has occurred. Thank you for your interest in Signature Vacations. Kind regards, The Signature Response Team So we will be there to enjoy the sun, beach, and hopefully a dive or two. Maybe the odd cerveza as well. Have fun all !!!!!
I'm in the process of narrowing down some hotels in the Huatulco area and the Hotel Bibbiguenda sounds appealing. I was wondering if anyone has had any first hand experience with this little hotel? Thanks in advance for all your help.
Hi again. Well, I think that we made a storm in a glass of water. The weather is very nice, the water is warm again (last week was freezing 69 F) and there are a huge reserve of mezcal, tequila, cerveza and margaritas waiting for all you. I'm wandering if we could organize a party around the pool with Dave, Melody, Linda, Rick, Kim and all the folks in their respective groups. If you decide to organize it, don't forget to call me at extension 842 or pick me up by the water sports center. We could send some pictures to Tom, John and Christine, showing how hard is the life in Huatulco. Keeep in touch. Suu amigo. Charlie. Carlos C. Ramos ACTION SPORTS MARINA
Hi Tom. The new look of your site is very nice. And considering that messages are inmeditely posted (saving you a lot of time updating the visitors comments in a regular basis) I will try to send a report of the time (not a forecast, just a simple report of tthe climate I watch every day). Somebody ask about rain. Can you imagine a tropical area, 28 C degrees, in front of a tropical sea covered by a fog bank at 2.00 pm ?. Probably not. But, believe it or not, last Sunday January 7, 2001, the fog came from the ocean, covering the full lenght of Huatulco's coast line. Vissibility was shortened to just 100-150 yards. Club Med could not be seen from the Barcelo side. It was amazing and incredible. We and Gala water sports crew decided to bring back to the beach as soon as the fog becomes thicker, all the Kayaks, sailboats and wave runners, to keep all the users safe at the beach. The effect of the fog was so amazing, that I went to the light house to watch thee show from the higheets point near to the coast. It was a terrific whe the fog clear in some spots, veru far away from the coast, and the sun light was reflected on the water surface. It looked like if that part of the ocean was floatinf in the sky. Last year, by these same days, something similar happened while I was diving. When I surfaced, the fog was very thick, and was hard for us (I mean, the boat skipper) to find the beach. On the afteernoon, we had rain storm (completely out of season). Next day, the sun was shinning again. These are the kind of things that makes Huatulco a magical place. Today, Tuesday 9, 2001. The sun was shinning, air temp was 29 - 31 C and ocean temperature was 74 F. If something changes, I'll let you know.
Buenos Dias Carlos, John, Tom and Huatulco travellers Thank you for thinking of me, I would love to see pictures and also hear from my friends, which are still living the great life in Huatulco! (most of them at the Gala as well at the Paraiso Huatulco crew, which handled the tours and transportation for Signature, Apple Vacation rep Luis and many more). The weather today is not cold but very cold, I believe it is around -18 degrees if you can understand the Canadian metric system! Day's like these, I question myself on why I ever left? But reading this site keeps me warm inside my head. I hope everyone or better yet I know eveyone will have a great time. Just a little story to put everyone's mind at ease, when I was selected by Signature Vacation we had a training in Toronto and only at the training did they tell us the destination we were going, well I was the only one selected to go to a "remote" area by myself and it was called Huatulco, I had never heard of it before, the customer service staff told, Christine, I will say hello and goodby as we know we will not here from you until your return, since Huatulco is a "no problem" destination. Nervous I left for Huatulco, once I arrived, the transportation drop of guests at the "Barcelo" then at the "Gala", I was so excited I had tears coming down my cheeks, I couldn't believe that I was going to stay here for a 6 months! Only for one incident, I had a successful season, the details of the problems were minor, and for most part of it were taken care of with guest satisfaction within a few hours. Hope to hear from everyone upon return. (oh yes, please have a tequila shot for me) Christine
Hi, I am traveling to Huatulco in February and would be glad if somebody could give me information about Paragliding in the area (Paragliding, the type which is done from mountains)
My husband and I are looking into Barcelo Huatulco for our next vacation. If all goes well we will see you there Charlie. I know If you go looking for defects , defects you will find. All it takes is a positive outlook and hey, you are there to relax and have a good time . Thats what going on vacation is all about. Oh, and it would be nice to hear some good things once those others return from their visit . Tell me Charlie how is the night life in the nearby towns , entertainment at Barcelo, shopping ...and of course the sites to see. Ciao for now
Hi Carlos, Keep me posted ont he weather. By the way we are looking into being there around April /May. What are we to expect for that time of year in weather. Ciao for now

Ciao for now
My husband and I were planning to spend some time in Zihuatanejo following our trip to Oaxaca (city). After looking at various websites, I see that Huatulco would be much easier in terms of flight connectons. We stayed at Camino Real in Puerto Vallarta a few years ago and loved it (new building). Has anyone stayed at El Camino in Huatulco? If so, I would love to hear about your stay there. Barbara Nevens Los Angeles, CA
We just got home last night from Huatulco. It is definitely a beautiful spot to go!! Castillo Huatulco is also now known as the Costa Club in all the travel brochures. It was pretty good! Very clean and the management and staff are very friendly and hospitable. Just some suggestions, ask for a pool side room. We spent half the week in a room facing the front of the hotel, its very noisy. It a main road and you hear everything, very hard to sleep unless you are used to alot of noise from traffic. We asked to switch rooms and they were very accomodating, we had room 405 which was a nice room with a view of the pool and very quiet!! The food is not bad, buffet if you are going all inclusive and al a carte offered for non all inclusive. If you are used to Mexico food, its pretty much average. Overall its a fairly decent hotel, not as glamorious as the Gala or Bercelo of coarse but it has a certain charm. They have their own private beach club, they offer a shuttle that runs every 30 minutes between the beach club and the hotel. Its on Chahue Bay, and its very nice and not as packed as the beaches at the Gala and Bercelo resorts which are usually wall to wall people. If you plan on doing any sightseeing tours, look up a company called FW4, they are excellent, Paulina & Cathy are a couple of the travel operators we had, they charge a little more than the tours offered at the hotel but its well worth it for the personal attention. We did the Coffee Plantation tour and the 7 bays tour, I would reccommend those if you are planning on doing some sight seeing. You'll love Huatulco, if you haven't already been there. We didn't want to come home! Also if you go all inclusive, don't forget to tip, they will go the extra mile to please you if you tip the staff. Hope you have a good trip.
Hi Mary. Is good to hear that you're coming with a positive attitude. It's going to be nice to see you here. Night life is not really impressive. There are two disco's (Magic Circus and El Dexquite). They are small, they play varied music (pop, rock, "quebraditas", tropical, cumbia, salsa). Thee ambiance is normally better on fridays, when more people go to them. Magic Circus is a "traditional disco", I mean enclosed into a big room, and El Dexquite is in a "Palapa" (a palm tree roof), open all around, next to one of the beaches of Santa Cruz. They serve the drinks in liters (one pint more or less) or half liter. There are also some bars around the main square. La Crema bar is quite popular among local people. Club Med and Gala have their own discos. You can buy a night pass for both and you'll have chance to see the show, have dinner and access to the disco. Gala includes drinks, and club MED not, only wine and beer during dinner. I can't tell you much about night life, because I'm a very quiet person, and I go to bars and discos probably three or four times a year (probably I'm geting old). I haven't seen Barcelo's shows yet. I leave the hotel by 6 o'clock, and at that time the shows have not started yet. I know they have a Mexican night every Friday, and they bring a folkloric dance group for the show. There is also a local musical group named "MARACAS" that plays on the hotel. I'll try to get more info about this and I'll write you again about sites to see and shopping. Keep in touch Tu amigo. The weather report: Another wondeerful day on paradise. Same temp., shinning sun, full moon, ocean calm and 30% humidity. The ocean a little bit colder at 72 F at surface and 69 F below 20 ft. depth. Mary: for april, the average climate is hot (on the high 90's), dry (not rain) the ocean temp. warm but with good probablities to be hit by "REBALSES " (Check the sectio on this web page that talks about "Strong Wave Action". Hi I just wanted to say that 2 yrs ago we stayed in Ixtapa at the Westin Brisas Resort and took some trips into Zihatenajo(spelled wrong) but it is really old Mexico there! Good if you want to see how the people really live. Wouldn't advise staying there unless that's what you are looking for. We are going to Huatalco Jan. 16th staying at the Gala. take care Peggy
Yes the name is correct. We are heading back to the Gala mid February. It is all inclusive and worth it. Talked to many tourists on our previous three trips to the Gala, nothing comes close, the staff [ we now call friends] really make the stay worthwhile. Try it, you will go back, it is more like going to a friends home than a hotel. Good luck on your decision, Terry.
HI I was wondering about the weather. On weather.com it says Huatulco is high 83 low 47f does it really get that cold in the evening???? thank you in advance for your response! We are going there Jan 16th .
My husband and I are thinking of staying at the Quinta Real in March. I am looking for visitor comments - good and bad - about the resort. We are also thinking about the Camino Real. Thanks, Judy
We will be visiting Huatulco in February and staying at the Gala. This is our first time in this part of Mexico and are looking forward to it. This is a great website and we are learning much. One question about the Gala...do they provide hair dryers in their rooms? I thought I read that somewhere. Any other info about the resort or the rooms is appreciated. Thanks. Linda
My parents and I have been to Mexico many times. We are thinking about visiting Huatulco for a week to 10 days starting February 24. As I live in a wheelchair, I need a hotel that is relatively barrier free. For instance, elevators, bathrooms big enough for a wheelchair, level access to the beach. We checked the Camino Real but found out there were too many stairs and no elevators. Does anyone know of a hotel that might better fit our needs? Thanks.
We just booked a trip to Club Med Huatulco for February. We have two teenagers (a girl and a boy) and were told that this is one of the best places for teens. Were we correctly advised? Second, having never been to Mexico, can you tell me a little about what to expect at this Club Med...what to bring by way of clothes, etc. Can I bring a radio..cell phone? I was also wondering what teens might enjoy about the City itself and the surrounding areas. Should I request a room near the beach or pool? No, we don't mind walking. Thanks for your help.
Please, Don't trust on the forecasts about Huatulco. 47 f would be possible only until the next glacial age ! TThat temp would be OK for Oaxaca City (located in a valley sourronded by high mountains but not for tthe coast. You'll see. During summer time, I turn my ceiling fan at 5 (maximum speed) up to sleep. I just lay down over the bed sheet wering just a short. During winter, I reduce the speed of the fan to three, lay down over the bed sheet, and I wear a short and T-shirt. The weather update for January 11, 2001. Same conditions but the first "REBALSE" (strong wave action) is in sight. The breaking waves on the beach had become a little bit stronger. Let's see what happens for tomorrow. Keep conected. Hi Mike. Club MED, Quinta Real, Magnihotel and Camino Real are not definitively worth for you. Barcelo has ramps, elevators and rest rooms (on the looby area) that fits your needs. In fact, you may reach the sand on the beach using the ramps we normally use to move the equuipment located in front of the water sports centers. And the beach staff (ours and Gala's) are always ready to give you a hand if you decide to take a boat trip. Gala has also elevators, but I'm not sure about other facilities. I'll ask in both hotels what other facilities do they offer, and I'll write you again. Your friend Charlie. Carlos C. Hair dryers were available in the rooms in February 1999.... Enjoy, the Gala is AMAZING.... especially the fresh nachos served at the grill for lunch!!!!
I am thinking about taking 50 couples in March. Please tell me what you think of the resort. These are VIP's Do you think this is the place to go?
I am thinking about taking a group of 50 couples to the resort. They are VIP of the Utah Jazz basketball team in Salt Lake. Do you think this would be a good place for a group that large? I have been to Huatulco, but never stayed in one of the large hotels. Your comments please.
Hi: We have been checking the comments here for 6 months and this is the first time we have heard anything bad about the Barcelo. I was a little surprised. We had friends stay there when it was the Sheraton and other friends stayed at the Gala. We are staying at the Barcelo for two weeks in March. I knew we will have a good time -- it's our vacation and we plan to enjoy. We have been to Mexcio 7 times now and have stayed at 4 - 6 star resorts. We have found that the older resorts show the wear of the tourists, but the newer ones (2 years and newer) still look fresh. We have to remember that they only look new during the first couple years. We are discriminating travellers and are generaly not happy booking with an ALL inclusive resort package. But we are giving it a try because everyone tells us that is the way to go now days. We understand that it will be a different experience for us. We are sure as long as we are not sick and the sun is shinning it will be a great trip. Mexico and Mexican people have never let us down yet. The Martins
Hi Dave I sure hope you have a good trip and do not have a bad experience at the Barcelo. I am sure if you are not satisfied with your room. The hotel will do it's best to re-locate you to another room. As for the Gala, our friends stayed there last year and had a great time except they all got very very sick and were still sick when they arrived home for about 6 weeks. They also spent two nights at the Barcelo and said they liked it better than the Gala. So who knows, it maybe just different rooms. I know that happened to us in Ixtpa in 96 our first room was a night mare and when we changed rooms, it was like being at a different hotel everthing was very different and it was only 2 more floor ups. As for the shortage of chairs around the pool area, that seems to be very normal at most resorts when it is busy - just go swimming and lay on your towels, relax and enjoy the sun. Good Luck and let us know how you make out as we are going to the Barcelo in March and we know it should be busy for March Break. The Martins
Hello- I was wondering if anyone can recommend a Marimba band in Huatulco ? We are planning a wedding and are looking for a good local group. Also we have some friends who would like to dive and are usually prepared with their own equiptment and are unsure of the diving equiptment in Huatulco, should they bring their own gear, or is it possible to get good gear in Huatulco? Are wet suits needed?? josie
Good morning, Yes the Gala is accessible for wheelchairs. They're are ramps, bathrooms are big, I can't rembember if you have the accessories in the bathtub though, this is something a most recent guest could probably answer. No problem for the restaurants either. If a main ground room is preferable for yourself, you could ask your travel agent to put in a request and advise the tour operator tu include the request in their manifest to the local rep. This could be arrange for you i'm sure. Enjoy your holidays! Christine
Carlos, Thanks for providing accurate weather reports. One never knows where the conditions listed on the internet are recorded from. Looking forward to sunny days, warm moonlit evenings, calm warm waters and lots of Margaritas!! It's -10C here which isn't bad for this time of year. Greg.
The Martin Family, Thank you for writing. I know we will have a great time. Signature contacted me and offered to relocate us to the Gala, but I am sticking with the Barcelo. I just got rattled by some of the comments. I was at the Gran Ventana in Puerto Plata and we loved everything about it. I later read comments from person who didn't like one thing about it. I'm not really too hard to please, so I know it will be fine. I will be posting a complete trip report at: http://members.home.net/ourvacations shortly after I return. Dave
I am visisting Gala in19-24feb with my family including two boys ogf 14 an 16 years old? Will there be any activities for them at the hotel. What about the ten club, does it exsists?
hello this is Lucy and Mark we will get married on july 27, we are looking forward to find a place for Honey-moon, can you suggest any hotel where they give special attention for the honey mooners?? And if it is possible any activities or places that usually the just married couples do or go to. You know, we don´t want a place all crowded of children. any answer please send it to my mail. If you prefer me to speak in spanish just feel free to ask. Thanks. lucy and mark
If it's like anything I've read, I don't think you or your VIPs will be disappointed. But when I get home, I'll let you know.
Carlos, Thanks for the weather info. But I'd like to know more about the "rebalse". Will this keep us off the beach and at the pool? or just out of the ocean? or will it be just more fun in the ocean? We are staying at the Gala in early February. Some of the pictures on this site look like you might be able to snorkel off the beach. Is this a possibility? Thanks. Linda
In February 1999, I was at the Gala (formerly Royal Maeva) on a company incentive trip. I was there with 75 colleagues and their spouses...... Not a single complaint about the resort, the food or the destination! In fact, the 2000 incentive trip to Aruba was a BIG disappointment since we LOVED Huatulco. This year we are off to Manzanillo at the Karmina Palace..... Hope it is spectacular!!

Hi Josie. My name is Carlos Ramos, and I'm in charge of SCUBA diving operations at the BARCELO. You don't mention which hotel will host you. If your friend want, they can bring their own equipment, but at least us (ACTION SPORTS MARINA) , will provide you with equipment at no extra charge, if you decide to dive with us. We are a PADI RESORT ASSOCIATION member (19632) and I have 11 years of experience divng in this waters. I'll send you an email with all the info about our SCUBA services. I only recommend to bring their own wet suits (3 mm should be enough). We have a section on this website. the link is http://www.tomzap.com/action.html About the marimba, there is a marimba that comes from Pochutla. Let me check where can they be reached and I'll forward you the info. Also, if you need information or any assistance on your wedding, just let me know it. Keep in touch. Your friend. Charlie.
Hi Mike. I've checked witth BARCELO and they have two rooms with facilities for persons with diferent capacity. They are located on the first floor, right in front of the swimming pool. This rooms are located on the right side of the hotel. The rooms numbers are 105 and 108. The email address of the sales and reservations department is ventas@huatulco.net.mx You can direct it to Olivia or Cesar. About Gala, they haven't provide me information about this yet. Saludos de tu amigo. Charlie.
We loved Club Med Huatulco at Thanksgiving 1998. Our teenager was 17 and there were far more young teens. I'm sure it all depends on the school vacations. Don't miss the shows at night, they're a kick.Clothes? Totally casual, you would be comfortable in shorts and shirt at night and bathing suit / shorts during the day. There was never any reason to dress up . I have heard the excursion to Oaxaca is good and the horseback riding trip too, ( bring levis). The club is spread out with the rooms up on hills with very nice views. We were in Nubes, Estrella seemed farther away from activities. I have no idea about cell phone or radio.
Hi to everybody. This is becoming a vice ! My wife is getting mad becauuuse I spend a lot of time "stuck" to the keyboard. Another sh.... day on the paradise. Same conditions than yesterday, and the "REBALSE" warning was a false alarm. Only big dwells on the open sea, but nothing really strong on the beach. We worked as is normal. I went to dive for a second time this morning, and on the way back, we were surrounded by the largest pod of dolphins (steno moteado) I've ever seen. I've seen dolphins hundreds of times, but nothing similar to this group. Hundreds of dolphins of all sizes swimming, jumping, splashing, running at the sides of the boat. Dolphins everywhere. One of them jumped and throw a fish on the air, and another jumped and catched it.It was terrific ! Linda is asking about the REBALSES. On this website, there is a section that talks about it. (Tom: is there a way to put links on the reply?) The rebalse is supossed that is a tidal efect produced by the atraction of tthe sun and moon. I've been watching them since 1990, and I can't find the keys to predict them. It's said that this happens during the full moon periods, but I can tell you that I've seen rebalses at any moon phase. The rebalse is a strong wave action on the beach. The waves come into the beach at a height higher than normal and break on the beach very strongly, washing off all it catch on its path (sailboats, wave runners, kayaks and uncautious people). Some times, specially in april - may, the waves, after breaking, reach the walls that limits the beach of the hotel's property. Some rebalses had left sand on the Barcelo and Gala's water sports shacks !. The problem is only on the surf zone. On the sea (in a boat for example), you'll probably will see a little bit high dwells, but there is not a problem. You can take boat trips, get the boat in the marina, and that's it. The rebalses average time is three days, but eventually, they can remain up to 15 days. And don't worry by the pools, they are not reached by the rebalse. I've sent emails to geophysics and oceanogrphers and I haven't received an explanaition of this ocean's behavior. But some weeks ago, I saw in tthe discovery channel, a group of surfers that go to a place in California called "Maverick". They know when the waves are going to be big, really big. They can know this because, when the wind is strong and blows in a given direction in a certain area of the pacific ocean, close to asia, the waves produced reach Maverick. Probably, this efectt is something similar. And to finish, this is not exclusive of Huatulco: the whole weest coast of Mexico, from Chiapas to Sinaloa, is afected by the rebalses. Let's see what happens tomorrow. Sorry for the multiple "eee" "tttt" and "uuu". I'm starting to think that I'll need a new keyboard. Su amigo. Charlie Carlos C. Ramos PADI IDCS 157092 Action Sports Marina & SCUBA Barcelo Huatulco Beach Resort
Como esta Tom? You have a great web site, the information I can find is endless. We are going to the Barcelò on Feb. 1st for two weeks. I was kind of disturbed by the last comments made by André on the Barcelò. For my husband and I it will be our 6th year in a row that we travel to Mexico.(Manzanillo, Ixtapa, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Cancun (Mayan Riviera)) All of our stay were different but now we know what we went out of our vacation. Good room, Good food, activities at night, beautiful beaches and a golf course near by. Huatulco sounds like the right place. The only disappointment over our heads is the hotel choice we made. Is the information that was given by André accurate or was he expecting more from a small 5 star Hotel then they could offer? We have been to one of the best 5 star that exist on the Mayan coast last year(Barcelò Mayan Beach and Garden 1200 rooms) the luxury and service in that Hotel is out of this word (they were taking the sports equipment our of the crates for us in February so any body that had been to the hotel before that, didn't have does to have fun with). But we are not expecting this out of an Hotel that has been taken over from Sheraton. But I think that the services offered on there web site should at lease be there. Can somebody give me a fair evaluation of the services offered at the Barcelò? We would also like to go on that boat cruse that you are talking about at a few different places? We don't like to go on the tours offered to us by the agent because most of the time they are more expensive then what you can find on your own and also less entertaining. Could you provide us with some name for nice snorkel trips? (we have our own equipment with us) The hotel also gave us some prices for a 3 round and 5 round of golf package $1440 pesos for 3 and $2250 pesos for 5 or is there a way to make a better deal by going directly to the golf course and asking for the prices? Mucho gracias amigo. Lyne and Christian. Nosotros somoes Canadiense (Ottawa) ccoul@infonet.ca
Tom- I really like how your website has changed. It appears easier to use and is an invaluable source of good information. We just came back a short time ago after spending 2 weeks at Christmas at the Barcelo with 2 other families. this is our third time down here and it was as good as usual. We did not see a cloud for 2 weeks and the weather was perfect. The Barcelo has not changed much in the past year. I think it is possibly a bit more lively. There was more action at the pool and my wife enjoyed the water aerobics class. in regards to the comments I have read, I found that the rooms were as nice as years prior. they are certainly kept up and definitely not musty! I find that this is a great resort for us and we already have our reservation for next year! We go with my two teenage sons and they are in agreement with me. With great weather, pool and beach, who needs more. The one thing we did find missing at the Barcelo was variety. I would not want to go there on the all inclusive package. The breakfast has not changed in 3 years. It is adequate, but needs some variety. This was the general feeling from the guests that were there on that package regarding all the meals. Not being on the all inclusive package is the reason why we keep coming back. The towns around there are charming and safe. The restaurants are great! to go to Huatulco and not explore the area is truly an injustice. It's charm is the lack of franchises that you find in the other resort areas. After coming back a number of thimes we go just about anywhere. This year we did the usual snorkling, ATV's,,etc. The one new thing we did was go on the excursion 2 hours into the mountains to see the waterfalls and eat at the coffee plantation. If you don't moind 2 hours on a bumpy dirt road it is worth the effort. To see the way the people live and to experience such a beautiful mountainous area is worth it. We all enjoyed playing at the falls. We ate at the usual restaurants. Sabor de Oaxaca and Oasis were great as usual. the find of the trip was a small garden restaurant across from Oasis. It was La Tentacion. The hostess was a charming college student who only wanted to help us in any way. The food was nothing less than fabulous. The shrimp kabobs were generous and the shrimp were large. The lobster was grilled just right, the steaks tender and the spagetti was also real tasty. The prices were a bargain to say the least. The only bad meal we had was at Casa del Mar. IT WAS A TERRIBLE RIPOFF. Some of us got our main courses while others did not get the salads. The food was all salty and the portions were meager. It was also the most expensive meal we had. STAY AWAY FROM CASA DEL MAR ! All in all we had a wonderful time and cannot think of a nicer place to go.
Hi Christian, André was there during the Christmas holidays. I'm sure the hotel was completely full and it was difficult to provide good service and facilities. Your trip won't have that problem. The Barcelo is generally well-liked. You can see Carlos at Action Sports at the Barcelo for snorkeling. You can arrange you own boating tours by going to the marina in Santa Cruz. The fishing cooperative is located there and you can make arrangements with them. There is also Propero Reyes, I think, that is mentioned under tour operators on my web page. He once offered me a tour of the bays at a fraction of what the hawkers on the beach were offering. You can have these people take you whever you want. A good plan might be a tour of the bays first, then another time just have them drop you off at a beach you like and pick you up later. I don't know about the current prices for golf, but you can certainly go directly to the golf course to make arrangements. Give us a report, please. Thanks, Tom
I have been to huatulco many times and enjoy fishing on the pacific. I would sugest to anyone wanting to catch fish losta fish ask for SENOR VALENTINO on the beach at tangalunda. his boat might not be fancy but he knows his bussiness and is honest and always on time, I have never not caught fish with him. he has a VHF RADIO which is always nice to have too.( the pacific is no lake!). he can also help you with anything else you might want in huatulco too. I also know his family well, he a all around good guy. FANK PERLONGO, CHICAGO.
barcelo is a good hotel the service is good people are nice a little quite a night though. been there 3 times since sheraton pulled out. the place is well maintained. if there are any problems its usually with APPLE VACATIONS screwing things up not the hotel. only problem i see is if you come on a charter plane with lots of people the line at the counter to check in hotel can be an hour or more. forget airport transfer bus pay the extra $ for a chevy suburban taxi waiting at airport ($25 us,or 250 pesos for 8 people} and beat the apple bus to hotel and no line at check in and choise of rooms!! you wont be sorry. frank, chicago

I don't think they do that. The mountains are dense tropical jungle--they'd never find you.
Sorry, this forum doesn't do links but you can always copy and paste into your browser window. The rebalses information is at http://www.tomzap.com/rebalses.html Also, the search engine is a good way to find things like that quickly. There is a link to the search engine on every page I think. Tom
Dear Lucy and Mark- Hotel occupancy rates in July tend to be about 30%. You WILL get special service! My latest wife has yet to see Bahias Huatulco, and I plan to take her "home" for the first time in late July, myself. While the underwater visibility is not a its peak and there is a slight chance of rain, it it still the best time of year in regards to having the place all to yourself. And I know my friends will have time to spend with us as well. Read all the hotel section. Decide if you want the local feel of La Crucecita; the uncompromising luxury of Tangolunda; or Santa Cruz somewhere in the middle. It's all so very fine... John
Lester, thanks for this posting. It's nice to see a more positive perspective on the Barcelo. We are going all inclusive this time because it is our first trip to Huatulco and that takes all the "guess work" out of things for us. When we fall in love with a place a go back several times we usually do what you do and get out and about more. It's nice to know that you find the area charming and safe to explore. Now, I'm looking even more forward to our trip! Hard to believe you and Andre were at the same place at the same time - what a different perspective!
Lester, thanks for the update. We're going to the Barcelo at the end of the month and it's nice to hear some positive comments about the hotel. We are going all-inclusive but will still try to eat dinner outside of the hotel a couple of times. We would like to try the restaurants you suggested - where are they located in Oaxaca? We're also trying to budget for the trip and I'm wondering if you could give me an idea of the cost of dinner for two at these restaurants? Thanks!
Good morning, yes they do have hair dryers in your room. You are going to have the best vacation. We were there 5 years ago and loved it. We are going back at the end of this month. Have a great time!
Hi there. My husband and I just returned home from a week in Huatulco and had the best time at the Gala . No complaints at all except that it should be longer. Bonus we also met some wonderful people. We are just concerned about the earthquake on the 13th and wondering how far the effects were. Hoping that it did not reach that far. Enjoy another sunny day. We enjoyed the bizarre weather day last Sunday. My husband and his new amigos also were part of the Crazy Canadian crew to body surf in the big waves. See you next year. Awesome website Tom, thanks
Thanks a lot Lester for the update on the Barcelo we will be there from Feb 1st to 15 and we are looking forward to it now. I'm please to see that André is an exception. After all I think he was expecting more then he paid for. We will be bringing oour golf club to try the nice course just beside the hotel any body been on it lately. Thanks again

Hi Tom thanks for the Email with all the info. My husband and I decided to stay at the Barcelo after all. The new comments posted on the web site are getting better all the time. We are going to be in Huatulco comming in from Montréal on the flight of Feb 1 and will be there until the 15. Christian, My wife and I stayed at the Barcelo Maya Garden Resort end of Nov 2000 for 8 days and agree with you, it is one of the best in all of the Playa del Carmen area resorts. You might find the comments and photos I have on my web site of interest. Also, I have a number of pages of my stay at the former Royal Maeva and some on Cabo San Lucas. I checked Tom's site before going to Hautulco and got tons of info from here and his "off site private night life hints". My wife and I are thinking our next trip will be back to the Pacific site of Mexico and Tom's site is helping us gather info. Jeff, Will be on vacation at the Gala Resort in March. You mentioned the name Mario Cobos as an individual who could help in planning some activities away from the hotel. We would like to see the bays, do some snorkeling, and perhaps do some inland treks. Could you please pass along his phone number. Thanks, Pep
We are heading down to Huatulco in a couple of days. We were wondering if anyone has any details about the earthquake and if there was any damage in the area. Thanks!

Hi, by the time we get there we'll be on our honeymoon....June 2001....we're still looking around for places to go...how does this spot look as a honeymoon destination?
I'm going on honeymoon in June 2001...what kind of weather can we expect this time of year?
Hola Carlos, Staying at Club Med Huatulco in two weeks time. Can you tell me, is club med within walking distance of any other hotels? Also is it possible to get a taxi from Club med to do some local shopping and possibly to arrange a tour of the bay for snorkelling? Any info you have in regards to any other activities that might be worthwhile would be great. Thank you. Kim
Any information about Huatulco or the Gala Resort or a person that could arrange some personal tours would be helpful. I am planning an incentive trip for about 100 people. Do you have any good ideas of what we can do there for a week.
Hi guys. Looks that opinions about the Barcelo are getting better. As I wrote in a previous posting (and Albert Einstein agrees with me) all is matter of relativity: same, place, under same conditions, can be fine for one and disapointing for another one. I'm sorry for Andre, I'm sure he came here with a good attitude, probably he expected just all that was offered to him and for some reason, he could not find it. And about the ratings (stars) given to each hotel, once again Einstein is right: this is matter of relativity. I can say you (and I don't work for the Barcelo, I mean, my salary is not paid by the hotel), you'll find only friendly, warm, service willing attitude from all the staff of the hotel. I'll try to answer some of your questions: The golf course is beautiful. The hole number 13 is next to the beach. Aboutt restaurants: EL SABOR DE OAXACA and EL OASIS are located in the main square area. Don't worry for their addresses: just ask to the taxi driver to take you there: an average dinner with one drink should cost 40 to 50 bucks (again, all depends on how many dishes you ask and how many drinks) and don't miss the "TLAYUDAS" or Zapotec pizza. The earthquake in El Salvador wasn´t felt here (thanks God) Huatulco is great for heneymooners: you'll find at least 10 isolated beaches to state how much you love each other. Best regards and see you soon. Come by the water sports shack to say hello. Su amigo. Charlie. Hi to every one. Fortunately, the terrible earthquake that reach El Salvador, wasn't felt here. Weather; incredible again. The ocean is perfectly calm. Ocean temp. 72 F. Hi ell. In mid June you could expeect some rain during afternoons. Huatulco has not many rains, but normally in mid - late june thee rainy seasson beggins, but some years, it delays until july or august. Nothing really scaring. Short showers at afternoons. And for honeymooners, rain is not always disapponiting. Tu amigo Charlie. Carlos C. We will be staying at the Gala starting Jan.29, so we will look for you. You are going to love this resort and area. This is our second visit . Look for us - Don , Denise, Jody and Pepe. I have not heard anything about an ATV tour, but sounds like fun. We are thinking of renting a Jeep for a day. See you there, adios!
Hi, We are going to Huatulco in February and wondering if anybody has information about the Marina Hotel in Santa Cruz. Thomas
Hi Tom, it's great to have someone there to ask questions. Our 4 couples will be arriving Jan. 18th. We have reserved Villa Pacifico in the Conejos area. What can you tell me about this area? Also are there dangerous fish in the beach waters, and how clear is the water? Thanks , see you soon-Terri
I was wondering the same thing. Also, if there is damage, is there anything we can bring with to help?
Hello All, My husband and I are staying at the Gala in early Feb. We are going with 4 other couples. We were wondering if there is any night life in Huatulco? Is there any clubs like Senor Frogs of Carlos O Charlies? Thanks
We are coming to Huatulco in Feb. staying at the Gala resort. It looks like you can snorkel right off the shore. Is that true?????? My husband wants to know if he will be able to parasail?

There is a new bar/club in Huatulco called la Selva. It is in La Crucecita and is the happening place in town. It is an open air balcony type of place with a really impressive look. The staff was really fun and friendly and the atmosphere was great. It was like a nice bar to hang out with but also had a dance floor and great music. Magic Circus is dead. La Crema is still a good bar for hanging out but is a grungier atmosphere. The Dexquite was also busy and was like a beach disco. It was also fun. I recommend La Selva. Valerie , the manager there was great and everyone friendly. Enjoy.

We will make our ninth trip to Huatulco & the Barcelo (Sheraton) Hotel in February. It has everything we want - at the top of the list is great weather & friendly people. We don't want or need a lot to do, we like to walk the beach, snorkel a little, lay in the sun, and play a few friendly games of volleyball in the pool each day. We also decline the all-inclusive because there are so many good restaurants. We often eat breakfast acrossed the street at the Jarro Cafe - it's also good for all other meals. In town, we like El Sabor de Oaxaca (the chicken mole is wonderful), Oasis, and Il Gardiniera del Papa. We have made several friends that vacation there every year and are looking forward to seeing them as well as the friendly staff. Carlos is right - it all depends on what you are looking for. If you need lots of activity and variety with lots of night life, this is not the place for you. But if you really want to get away, relax and enjoy warm, sunny days, Huatulco will be perfect for you. I think the Barcelo looked like it was being refurbished last year. We really don't spend much time in our room except to shower and sleep. Coming from Wisconsin, we want to be outside every minute we can. We have always been happy with our rooms. Tip the maids and you can get fresh flowers on your bed.
As I promised, I called this morning to the golf course, and they gave me this fees: Green fee 18 holes 550.00 pesos Car 180.00 pesos Equipment rental 120.00 These fees are for each player. I asked about multiday packages, and they told me that there are not packages available. So, if your hotel or travel agency offers you a better deal get it. Don't forget to ask if taxes are included (I'm talking about the 15% of IVA).
Hi friends. I've posted the fees you may get directly at the Golf course. I think Barcelo is offering you a better deal. If you have time, come by the water sports office to say hello. Su amigo. I am a triathlete and have never been to Mexico, however found out that Huatulco is a good area to road bike. I am a student and would like to come to Huatulco for 10 days in mid February. I am looking for an inexpensive accomodation where I can cook for myself, maybe one other person. Are there any Youth hostels, B&B's, inexpensive accomodations in Huatulco or nearby area?. What would be an estimate for 10 days? thank you Julia
What's the best way to get from the Huatulco airport to the resort area? Our travel agent can sell us hotel/airport transfers but I was wondering if the taxis might be cheaper and quicker.

We (3 families) just got back from the Gala yesterday. My framily had gone there when it was a Maeva. I am happy to report that it is still great. The staff are incredibly kind and fun to be around. The rooms are clean and the food and activities are good. The grounds are just incredilble. The shows are slightly unprofessional but they are done with such enthusiasm it doesn't matter. Our kids loved them and so did we. Our only regret is that we only booked one week! We won't make that mistake again. We met Charlie (Carlos) Ramos - a truly sweet guy - everyone has only good things to say about Charlie. Unfortunately Charlie was the only good thing we heard about the Barcelo (sorry Charlie). The Barcelo does have a very pretty lobby. The main complaint was that the Barcelo is billed as a 5 star and it really should be a 3 star. I won't get into details since I did not have the experiences myself. For anyone who wants to shop. We were surprised to find that the prices of things in the shops across from the hotel were cheaper than in town. the people of Huatulco are wonderful. I could easily live there. Rhonda snorkeling can be done almost right off the shore. I did not see any parasailing though.
We were wondering if the Gala has a shuttle to and from the airport. What are some of the best excursions and who should we ask for? Is there anything you did that you would not recommend doing again?
Has anyone have any suggestions on what sailing excrusions are available? There are 10 of us in our group arriving on Feb.3. Who should we ask for?
Family of four(girls,8&13) traveling to Club Med during President's Week. Any advice, recommendations, and/or "must-avoids"?
How is the disco at the Gala? Is there any nightly theme dinners/entertainment? Our group has been to Ixtapa and we are looking forward to visiting Huatulco. We have heard such wonderful things!! Tom, this is a GREAT site!!
We are making our first visit to Huatulco in Feb. and are staying at the Camino Real Zaashila. How does this resort compare to the other resorts?
Hi: I just read your posting and was wondering if there were any water slides at the resort and if horseback riding is available through the resort? We will be traveling with one teenager and I was wondering if the disco is family friendly. We were at the Maeva in Manzinillo a year ago and she loved the pool and disco. Also, how was the food selection? Is there anything you would highly recommend or recommend we avoid. We have been to Mexico 3 times now and have alway had a good time and enjoyed the friendly people. Thanks for your help! Katy
Hello everyone, we will be in Huatulco staying at the Gala starting January 28. Do you think we will need to bring sweaters for the evening? Thankyou for your reply
Our travel agent told us that shuttles to/from the airport must be either pre-arranged or we'd have to use a taxi. We've arranged our travel from Apple Vacations. Also, regarding snorkeling, we were told that the best location is reached by boat and there is a cave that you can snorkel into. The travel agent did not remember the name of the location but said that the hotel would know it if we described the cave.
Judy - Thank you so much for the lunaazul web site!!
Try http://lunaazul.netfirms.com. I haven't gone on a tour with Jack, but in an earlier post, Judy recommended them. Jack is a former Canadian resident, so no Spanish required to communicate with him. I also think you can pay to have the boat to yourselves if you want.
Charlie - Thanks very much!!!
Have you tried Apple Vacations at www.applevacations.com? They got us in February 1-6, booked just last week. You might be running into spring break with your dates. Have you tried the Barcelo? We were there 5 years ago. It's next door to the Gala and almost as nice. It also has a swim-up bar, a nice pool and good food. Both can be booked as all-inclusive.
Grant, try http://lunaazul.netfirms.com to schedule a sailing/snorkeling tour. I'm not sure how many people his boat fits, but he's got a Contact link on his site and he's from Canada, speaks fluent English.
I am interested in having my long hair braided while in Huatulco in Feb. What I'm looking for is someone to braid all of my hair in small braids. I had this done in Rosarito last year and loved it. Any suggestions?
Just hang out on the beach at Tangolunda and one of the fine ladies of the area will tend to you. Then send pix to Tom for posting on the website!
Thanks much John! I will send Tom a pix.
we will be staying at the Magnihotel on March 15 2001. We would like to know if there are Québec'rs staying at the hotel. If so, we would like to have your opinion on the different services offered. How is the food, the rooms (junior suites), the beach club, etc. Any info will be appreciated. Hope hearing from you soon. Thanks !!!
We stayed at the Zaashila last spring and loved it. We rented one of the condos through a realtor and had access to all of the hotel facilities. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the grounds are beautifully maintained. I would not hesitate to recommend it. Susan
My husband and I stayed nearby at the Zaashila last spring break and some friends stayed at Club Med. They had two little boys (8 & 11) and loved it. Lots of activities for the children as well as the adults. We also loved the Camino Real Zaashila--rented a condo and had a great time. I can't think of anything to warn you about. I would take my own snorkling gear if you go on any of the boat tours of the bay. they rent out the equipment but it's too pricey and I was scared to use the mouth pieces after who knows how many other people had been using them!
Things may be different now, but 5 years ago, my husband and I honeymooned at the Barcelo (then Sheriton). We received no special treatment because we were honeymooning, but the staff was all extremely friendly. I don't remember children, although they may have been around. We were there in Feb. and the majority of the guests were couples or small retired groups. At first we were disappointed there weren't more 20-30-somethings (maybe 15%), but in the end we were very happy with the friendly attitude of everyone. We met some great people! I suggest a sunset cruise, although I don't remember which company we went with. We also went sunrise fishing with a local man we met on the beach. It was very fun and we caught a tuna, which the Sheriton cooked for us that evening for free (included with the all-inclusive package). We'll be at the Gala in February and I'll try to remember to update you when we get back. Have fun!
Going for the first time. any thing we should know to make our time there the best? thank you [firstweek of march
Laura: We also rented acondo at the Zaashila from 12-7-00 to 12-14-00, it is great. We paid $700.00 US dollars for the week but it is a little higher now, I think $1000.00 We met some people who had a regular room and not a condo and they paid about $180.00 US per day and the room was only half the size of out condo. Hi. I worked for Club Med for 5 years in the photo team. I am in stand by now, but I know the Med perfectly. There are not a better place for kids and teenagers than Club Med. The teens and mini club is the largest on the village (up to 20 GO's) TThey have a lot of different activities on the beach, on the theater, on the archery stand. They can learn to "fly" on the trapeze (that's really amazing), and to perform as professionals on the Circus (don't miss the circus show: you'll be surprised). Your girls will be very happy and bussy. Saludos de su amigo. Charlie. Carlos C. Ramos PADI IDC Staff Instructor 157092 Action Sports Marina Barcelo Huatulco Beach Resort 9(58) 100 55

Hello, my husband & I are off to Huatulco mid Feb. Some of the comments have literally scared me to death. However, we both love Mexico (& have been going to San Jose del Cabo & Puerto Vallarta for years). The people are wonderful, kind and generous and we do not wish to vacation in a spot like Canada or (heaven forbid) US. The reason we go to Mexico is for the people, their customs and their wonderful laid back lifestyle. If this is the reason some people dislike Huatulco, then I'd like to know. We don't mind the differences, however, when paying the high price of this all inclusive, we are expecting a few basic things. We have always stayed strictly away from all inclusives as we like to sample all the different foods and shopping districts of the areas we visit. Our best times are spent with our own car, exploring beaches and quaint little restauraunts. We've likely dined in places that would scare the daylights out of most vacationers!! We aren't down there for the night life or party scene, but we are expecting clean rooms, good service and all the amenities described in Signature's book. Please confirm that we have not made a bad decision in the Barcelo. Deanie
Hi Emily. I seee you'vee been very active. The palce you are asking for is LA CUEVA DEL VAMPIRO (the vamp's cave) and it's locateed in la Entrega beeach. Youu can reach this beach by car or boat. Thee road is beatiful and runs along the coast, with incredible high vieew points. I could describe thee cave (you may get in snorkeling) but... you should leave something to discover by yourself. On la entrega beach, you can eat at EL ARRECIFE restaurantt. The owner is Alfredo Salgado and say him you are a friend of me. If you want, I can help you to arrangee youur tours, snorkeling, fishing, atv's, mountain biking, rafting, horse back riding, bird watching, rock climbing, rappeling, cannoning, coffee plantations ttour, ocean kayaks tours, boat and bays tours, sail boat cruises, scuuba diving of course, whatever. I'm thinking tto set my own virtual travel ageency on line. If travel agenciees makes me competition selling scuba diving (and many times sending cuustomers asking for me to different dive shops) why can't I provide thee same services they do ? Cordelia, you've made mee feel shy !. Thank you so much for youur commeent. It agreees with the opinion my mother has about me ! But being serious, let me tell you that all the staff of the Barcelo (I don't work directly for the hotel, I mean, the hotel doesn't pay my salary) are very nice, and all they try to give the best of themselves to serve their guessts. We've just booked an all inclusive holiday at Barcelo. This is a scary thing for us as we do not think we like all inclusives. But, in looking at all the info on Huatulco, this appeared to be a good way to go. We usually do our o
