Salina Cruz (population 230,000) is located 83 miles (134 km) east of Huatulco, Oaxaca, on the Pacific coast at the Gulf of Tehuantepec. Here, coastal highway 200 intersects highway 185 which crosses the isthmus of Tehuantepec. Travelers driving to the coast of Oaxaca from the United States or Canada may use this route to avoid the slower mountain roads. The bus from Oaxaca City to Huatulco and Puerto Angel also passes through Salina Cruz.

Salina Cruz is a shipping port and the southern terminal for the railroad line that crosses the isthmus. It is near an oil-producing region and has a large oil refinery. It is not really a popular destination for tourists.
