Huatulco refers to the resort area Bahías de Huatulco or the bays of Huatulco. The four main parts of Huatulco are Tangolunda, the area where the more upscale resorts are located, Santa Cruz, a small town with more hotels, the marina and Santa Cruz beach, La Crucecita, another small town just inland from the beach area having a more genuine Mexican ambiance, and Chahué, an area between Santa Cruz and Tangolunda. These areas are within a mile or two of each other, so hotels and restaurants for all of them are listed here on the Huatulco page. Construction on the Huatulco resort area began in 1983; virtually all structures were built after that date. The existing population was relocated to Santa Maria Huatulco. The area is known for its beautiful isolated bays separated by rocky hills set against the backdrop of the Sierra Madre del Sur. For a look at the area see Aerial Photos of Huatulco. Traveling north of the area, the terrain rises quickly becoming a lush tropical jungle where crops such as coffee, bananas, cashew nuts are grown. • Bird Festival Festival Las Aves en las Áreas Naturales Protegidas. The first event took place October 25-27, 2006. Events included presentations, films, workshops, excursions to the countryside. The event was sponsored by Parque Nacional Huatulco (CONANP), la Sociedad Mexicana de Ornitología y la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The state of Oaxaca has the greatest number of bird species in the country.
• Festival Música por la Tierra Since 1994, the festival has taken place annually in May. The festival features musical artists from Mexico and abroad and seeks to raise awareness and money for environmental conservation.

Car Rentals: There are several car rental companies in Huatulco including Dollar, Hertz, Thrifty, and Eurocar. Thrifty and Eurocar overcharge ($90/day in 2008), and require that you purchase insurance even if your credit card already covers it, and fail to honor reservations. Eurocar is particularly aggressive about searching for extra dings and scratches to charge you for. Cars are often not available for walk-in customers during the tourist season. Consider that for what it costs to rent a car from Thrifty or Eurocar, you could have a taxi with driver for the day. Hertz is considerably cheaper, doesn't require that you purchase the extra insurance and is recommended. For best results, make your reservation online, print out the information, and bring it with you. See also general information about car rentals.

Taxis: Rates for taxis are fixed. They are posted at the travel booth at the zócalo in La Crucecita. Taxis from the airport are another story, about 3 times the cost as is typical in Mexico.

• Air Adventure: Flight to Huatulco Webmaster, Tom Penick, records his February 2008 flight from central Texas to Huatulco in a Piper Arrow.
• Airline: Aerotucan is now flying daily between Oaxaca-Huatulco and Oaxaca-Puerto Escondido. Airfares are approximately US$100 one-way.
• Airline: Flights to Oaxaca depart 10am for Oaxaca in small plane. Flight time is 35 minutes (much quicker than the 8-hour drive). The return flight departs Oaxaca at 9am. US$240 round trip. (2/10)
• Airport: Huatulco International Airport (HUX) has flights to Oaxaca and to Mexicana's hub in Mexico City.

The first Huatulco surfing and boogie board contest was held May 1, 2003 at Copalita beach.

• Rio Copalita Surfers have been observed at the mouth of the Rio Copalita. This is the only surfing location near Huatulco that I am aware of.
• Zipolite There is limited surfing at this bohemian-style community, about 45 minutes west of Huatulco.

• La Zona Arqueológica Bocana del Río Copalita is located on the Río Copalita. It opened to the public October 2010 after 12 years of excavation and study. The site dates to about 500 B.C. and is located at the boundary between Mixtec and Zapotec regions. A ball court measuring 23 x 45 meters is similar in construction to the one at Monte Albán and contains carvings depicting players. Several other structures have also been excavated. The 35-hectare site is located 10 kilometers from Huatulco.
